approved the hiring of Rachel Barnwell as Executive Director. Barnwell will begin in her new role September

Blood Drive scheduled for Sept. 8
The American Red Cross will be sponsoring a blood drive at the Screven County Recreation Dept on
Thursday, Sept. 8 from noon until 5 p.m. Every donation goes to local area hospitals to save lives in
the area. One blood donation has the potential
of saving three lives.
The process is easy. Red Cross volunteers will
go over basic eligibility and you will be asked
to show and ID such as a driver’s license. The
volunteers will ask you basic health questions
and then check your temperature, pulse, blood
pressure, and hemoglobin level. The blood
donation process takes an average of ten
minutes, during which time you’ll be seated
or lying down. Every two seconds, someone in
the U.S. needs blood.

“This community is a good fit for us. Everybody is just so friendly,” Kent and Amanda
Haddix told me last week while we talked in one of their rental cabins. Leaning Pines
Campground and Cabins reminds me of a 4-H camp of old. The cabins are rustic and quiet.
If relaxation and solitude is what you’re after, this is the place.
The campground was built in 2008 by the Edenfield’s and then purchased by Doug Green.
The place was built as a hunter’s refuge. When Doug decided to return to Florida, the
Haddix’s saw their opportunity to own a campground. “We had been looking for three years
to buy a campground,” Amanda says, “we wanted a place to raise our three children away
from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and the technology.” Kent laughs, “it’s funny
because this place has better internet than folks have in town.” So, in June, the couple
became the newest owners.
“We have big plans for Leaning Pines,” Amanda describes, “we are going to build more
cabins, create a common area and offer more activities tailored too outdoors.” They want
the spot to be family friendly. “Oh, we’ll never stop hosting hunters, we offer fish and game
cleaning stations as well as deep freezers,” Kent says.
The campground offers 8 RV hookups and 6 with „
