Annora Mallard
Special Contributor
People’s lives get upended by many tragedies and
trials...wars, hurricanes, divorce, job loss, etc. The
owner of “The Music Shop” (book title) was Frank
who could diagnose what you needed to hear with
little more than instinct and conversation. “The man
who only listened to Chopin” really needed a dousing
of Aretha Franklin. The sleepless new mother
testified that the Troggs’ “Wild Thing” was the lullaby
she had longed for. Frank prescribed albums and
had handily fended off cassettes, but the burgeoning
CD industry of the 1980’s was pushing his beloved
records to the brink of destruction, as well as his
vinyl-only allegiance.
Double teamers, Gayle Cousar and Annora Mallard
chose and led this book for the July GRITS Book
Club. Albums lined the bookcases and table with the covers of baby boomers’
childhood soundtracks...Tom Jones, Janis Joplin, Bobby Sherman, the Mamas &
the Papas, the Eagles, and Elton John to name a few. All the while, a record player
was spinning tunes beside a displayed 8 track player and a cassette player. Rachel
Joyce, the author, made a second appearance on the GRITS roster with this 2017
novel. The rocky road of Frank’s life, which stifled under his
mom, Peg, and imploded with love interest, Ilse, was the
center of attention. Readers discussed the quirky characters
of his “urban family”, themes, music therapy, favorite songs,
the book playlist on Instagram, and the recent resurgence of
vinyl. Overall, “The Music Shop” has got a good beat and it’s
easy to dance to. Give it a spin!
