“Godliness”
Do you have anyone in your life that you look up to as a godly man or woman?
What does godliness look like? Godliness is someone who is close to God,
whose life is evidence of the impact of their relationship with God. The word
“godliness” found in the New Testament means “a proper response to the things
of God, which produces obedience and righteous living”. A godly life is what the
author of Hebrews was pointing to in Hebrews 13:7 when he wrote, “Remember
your leaders who have spoken God’s word to you. As you carefully observe
the outcome of their lives, imitate their faith.” Our leaders should lead godly
lives - lives full of the beauty of the gospel, the holiness of God, faithfulness and
obedience that we should long to live like them, to pattern our lives after theirs,
because of how beautiful and appealing their lives look to us.
Take a moment and think of someone godly that you know. Now consider that
person - think about their life, think about the impact they have had on you,
on others. Do you want your life to look like theirs? God has blessed me over
the years with godly men and women in my life that have influenced me. I have
especially been blessed with what I call “good old men”, godly older men who
speak into my life and influence me, from a well of wisdom that God has built in
them over decades of obedience in walking with Him. My desire is to follow in
their footsteps. I hope you have godly examples that you desire to imitate also.
How do we get there though? How do we live godly lives? Last week at our
revival service Pastor John Waters from FBC Statesboro challenged us with
this truth - “Godliness doesn't happen by chance, godliness happens by choice.”
We don’t stumble into obedience, we grow in it. We have to choose to obey, we
have to choose to draw near to God. James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God, and he
will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you
double-minded.” We must choose to draw near to God, to cleanse our hands, and
to purify our hearts. Jesus alone makes this possible for us.
Jesus is the example for us of godliness. Jesus chose to leave Heaven and come
to earth as a servant, to perfectly and completely do His Father’s will, going to
the cross and dying as the sinless atoning sacrifice for man’s sin. With every step,
in every moment, Jesus was walking in perfect obedience to His Father, God.
Because Jesus fulfilled God’s plan in dying on the cross and being resurrected
from the grave, He made a way for our hearts to be purified and our hands to be
cleansed. Drawing near to God means asking God to purify our hearts in Jesus,
an internal change of the heart, and cleansing our hands, an external change of
our behavior.
Christians pursue godliness when we follow the example of Jesus. Jesus chose
to submit to God’s will and obey. If we would grow in godliness, we must choose
to submit to God’s will and obey. The first step of godly growth is to obey James
4:8, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands,
sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
If you desire to grow in godliness ask God to help you. You can pray something
like this, “God, thank you for the godly examples you have put in my life. I have
seen the outcome of their lives and I want my life to look like that too. Please help
me to grow in godliness. I want to draw near to You, please draw near to me as I
draw near to You. Cleanse my hands and purify my heart, bringing about godly
change in my heart and godly change in my behavior, so that I will have a greater
desire to obey and walk with you. Please help me to follow Jesus’s example of
submission and obedience as I walk with You. In Jesus’s name, Amen.”
Are You at Increased Risk
of Getting Pneumonia?
(StatePoint) Pneumococcal pneumonia is a potentially serious bacterial lung
disease that can be contracted any time of year. In fact, according to the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pneumococcal pneumonia causes
150,000 annual hospitalizations nationwide. It can even be life-threatening in
serious cases.
To help reduce the burden of this lung disease, the American Lung Association
and Pfizer are partnering to share important facts about pneumococcal pneumonia
for adults 65 or older and adults 19-64 with certain underlying health conditions.
Here’s what to know:
What is pneumococcal pneumonia? Many people think pneumococcal
pneumonia is a cold or the flu, but it’s not. Pneumococcal pneumonia is caused by
bacteria that live in the upper respiratory tract, and it can spread to others through
coughing or close contact. Common symptoms include high fever, excessive
sweating, shaking chills, coughing, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath and
chest pain. Some symptoms can appear quickly and without warning.
Who is at risk? While anyone can get pneumococcal pneumonia, some people
are at higher risk of getting severely ill, including those 19 or older with certain
medical conditions such as asthma, COPD, chronic heart disease or diabetes, and
adults who smoke cigarettes. Additionally, even healthy adults 65 and older are
at increased risk because the body’s immune system naturally weakens with age.
Visit Lung.org/pneumococcal to take a two-minute quiz to determine if you are at
elevated risk.
How can you help prevent pneumococcal pneumonia? The CDC recommends
pneumococcal pneumonia vaccination for adults 19 or older with certain
underlying medical conditions, and for adults 65 or older. Unlike the flu shot,
you don’t need pneumococcal vaccination ■
