coast, is dedicated to maintaining the delicate
balance between nature and humankind through
conservation, education, and preservation.
Surrounded by salt marshes, expansive oceanfront,
and one of the last in-tact ancient maritime forests,
it is a peaceful coastal habitat situated within the
Golden Isles. From 22 miles of bike paths to historic

With Georgia Southern
football less than I week
away, September 3rd, I
seem to be asking myself
the same question year
after year. Why is Erk
Russell not in the College
Football Hall of fame?
And is there any warrant
to him being in the HOF
in the first place. In this
article I will answer both
questions and show you
how, without a shadow
of a doubt, Erk SHOULD
be in the Hall of fame!
First let’s start off with
him being a 4 Sport
Letterman at Auburn,
not only is was he a 4
sport letter winner there
but he was the FINAL 4
Sport letterman at the
university and had 10
letters that he won in
total. That is also were
Erk started his coaching
journey at. From 1958-
1962 Russell was an
assistant at Auburn
before leaving for
Nashville and Vanderbilt
University where he
spent one season
After his work as an
assistant he got the call
to head to Athens and
the University of Georgia
where for 17 years he

be a roll off for furniture and
larger scraps and a comer
in some of the dump sites
for people to put metal/free
stuff. If you don't make
them dive for it, they wont
have to throw the other
17 cubic yards of trash on
the ground just to get that
2 lb Weber grill your wife
got you 15 years ago that's
missing a leg. I know that
the county wouldn't get rich
on the transfer fees then, but
seriously, my property taxes
have basically doubled here
since 2011. That should pay
for something. I basically
don't want to hear griping
from the government about
money. Those of us out here
working to produce it, just
have to figure it out and so
should they. I had to make
hard decisions the last 2 years
as a lot of companies did.
The county needs to do the
same and focus on the core
services they are supposed to
provide. Otherwise, really
privatize it and let us pay
for our own trash service
directly and lower the taxes
to account for it.

Erskine “Erk” Russell
worked as the defensive
coordinator under Vince
Dooley. During the 17
years that Erk served
as Georgia Bulldogs'
defensive coordinator,
the Dawgs played 192
games and held the
opposition to 17 or fewer
points in 135 of them.
In 74 of those contests,
the defense kept the
other team's scoring
in the single digits,
including 27 shutouts.
Coach Russell's Georgia
defenses allowed more
than 28 points just 18
times in 17 seasons. His
final season at Georgia
was 1980 which was
also, up until the 2021
National championship
game, was Georgia’s last
national championship
led by 2 factors Herschel
Walker and the
Junkyard Dawg Defense
which had Erk Russell at
the helm.
In 1981 Russell
was hired by Georgia
Southern University in
Statesboro Georgia. Erk,
out of his own pocket,
resurrected the Eagles
which culminated in the
1982 season that saw a
kickoff for the blue and
white for the first time in
40 years. You read that
right, a program that
was dormant for FORTY
YEARS was resurrected
in part because of one
man Erskine Russell.
From kickoff in 1982
Russell led the mighty
Georgia Southern
Eagles up until the
1989 season amassing
in that time an 83-22-1
record. Think about that
folks Erk resurrected
a deceased Georgia
Southern football
program that had been
dormant for 40 years
and the success of the
team was FANTASTIC!
In those 7 season
Russell also brought 3
National Champions to
Statesboro!
The argument by
the CFB Hall of Fame
committee to this point
was the criteria of 10
years coached or too
wins but folks it would
take a total lack of
situational awareness
and total disregard
for history for them to
continue to keep Erk
Russell out of the HOF.
Any Eagles fans
reading this will enjoy
what I will end with.
“I’m gonna say it one
more time. We are
Georgia Southern. Our
colors are blue and
white. We call ourselves
the Bald Eagles. We call
our offense the Georgia
Power Company...and
that’s a terrific name
for an offense. Our
snap count is 'rate,
hike.' We practice on
the banks of Beautiful
Eagle Creek and that’s in
Statesboro, Georgia-the
gnat capital of America.
Our weekends begin on
Thursday. The co-eds
outnumber the men
3-to-2. They’re all good
looking and they’re all
rich. And folks, you just
can’t beat that...and you
just can’t beat Georgia
Southern. And you ain’t
seen nothin yet.”
HAIL SOUTHERN!
