Bacon resigns
from Development
Authority
Joe Brady
Editor
Dorie Bacon has been the face of the
Development Authority for the past n
years and as she steps down as director and
takes a new position. “I have enjoyed my
tenure with the Development Authority,
and I have also enjoyed working with our
existing industries and education partners
to come up with workforce solutions like the
Manufacture Ready program and the 8th
grade manufacturing field trip.”
Dorie has assumed the role of Senior
Project Manager, Region 12 working with the
existing industry and regional recruitment
under the Georgia Department of Economic
Development, she will continue to be based
in Screven County.
Under Bacon’s direction the county has seen
the opening of Claxton Poultry, Omega Piezo Technologies, ELK Distribution, and
New Bay Technology. “One of the greatest things about doing economic development
in a small-town environment like Screven County is the teach approach,” explains
Bacon. “Our board is a working board-cooking and serving dinners, The city, county
and chamber of commerce are partners as well and only want what is best for
Screven County.”
Dorie concludes with, “I have the honor of sharing the office with Grace Waits, one
of the hardest working people out there. Her creativity and servant heart has been
an inspiration to me. I have also been humbled by both Chairman I have had the
privilege of working for-Stephen Milner and the late Bobby C. Smith.”

Amanda also shares her aeroponic tower garden

feed my family home grown food. With the aeroponic
system, food is grown 30% faster than dirt farming.
“I can grow anything a standard garden can grow,
except root vegetables.” She looks forward to sharing
her knowledge with anybody who wants to learn
more about it.
The price to stay at Leaning Pines is $15-20 per

and $80-$ 120 per night for cabins. “We also want to
collaborate with other local businesses such as food
trucks, and horse stables. We are open to ideas.” The
couple is working tirelessly to make Leaning Pines

good campground can only draw tourists to the area,”
Kent says.

Allen speaks with Rotary
Sarah Saxon
Reporter
The Rotary club met this past
Thursday at Wall’s Diner and
they had Georgia’s 12th District
House of Representative Rick
Allen as their guest speaker.
The son of a farmer, Allen is
proud to serve on the House
Committee on Agriculture,
which enables him to work
as an advocate for farmers
in Washington and to shape
legislation to bolster Georgia’s
number one industry.
Additionally, he is a member
of the House Education and
Labor Committee and is serving
as the Senior Republican on
the Subcommittee on Health,
Employment, Labor, and
Pensions.
Allen discussed the opioid
epidemic currently ravaging the country. “Right now, the most common cause of
death for people ages 16 - 35 is fentanyl deaths.” Allen referenced the four West
Point cadets who died recently, two from marijuana laced with fentanyl and the
other two who died trying to save them.
Lastly, he stated that “before you vote for a candidate, pray over it to make the
right decision.” (photo by Sarah Saxon)
