Jenkins County native,
Talmadge Fries, has a lot
to celebrate these days.
We all make cakes. Millen
and Sylvania are full of
amateur bakers selling
their tasty treats out of
their kitchens but it the
fine details that makes a
cake more than average,
but extraordinary!
American Towns Media
has released their top
seven cake shops in
Georgia and Fries’ The
Cake Corner in Pooler
takes away one of the
honors. Fans of the
bakery enjoy a variety
of unique flavors, including key lime, strawberry,
pineapple, and all the classics. Their red velvet cake
recipe as even graced the pages of this newspaper in
Talmadge’s cooking column each month.
Custom cakes are The Cake Corner’s specialty, and
they offer 3D shapes,
tracings, and custom
artwork. The bakery is
located at 105 Moore
Avenue, Pooler and
may be reached by
dialing 912-748-5952.
The bakery has always
delivered to Millen,
where it all began. “I
grew up around food
and family baking
delectable delights in
the kitchen. One of my
earliest memories is
of Mama pulling out
a warm cake from the
oven. “
Also making the list is Arts Bakery and Cafe,
Duluth; How Sweet it is, Columbus; Mi-Lady Bakery,
Tifton; Wicket Cakes of Savannah, Savannah; and
Sugartopia, Cornelia.
Fries is the owner of the Cotton Gin, a florist
and gift shop in Millen, he has owned since 1987
as well as the Jenkins County Board of Education
Transportation Director. He is also active in his local
garden club, Main Street Millen, St. Nicholas Toy
Box, and an active member of his church, Trinity
Episcopal.

The FBC Sylvania Preschool got to meet
some of our First Responders last week.
Chief Shane Burke with the Sylvania Police
Department and local firefighters visited the
preschoolers and showed them what they do
to keep us all safe. The class tied in a Bible
lesson with the visit, “love one another
as God has loved us!” Some people are
blessed to have jobs where they get to show
love to others daily! (photo contributed)

“Great Scott! Screening is the Future”
Back to the Future has to be the best-known movie about time travel. Dr. Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, steals plutonium to turn a DeLorean into a
car time machine which Marty McFly, played by Michael J Fox, uses to travel back in time and in a series of mishaps nearly erases himself from history.
In these type stories the past and the future are connected so that changes in the past alter events in the future. It’s eye opening how the today we consider
set in stone could have been very different. Everything that makes us who we are as people today is built on who we were in the past and stories about
time travel show us how small choices in the past lead to profound changes today. Here is where we make a right turn and shift gears to talk about cancer
screening and because September is gynecology cancer awareness month that’s our focus. So, let’s charge the DeLorean to 1.21 Gigawatts and pedal to
the metal until we hit 88 miles an hour to travel back in time to the turn of the last century when cervical cancer was the most common cancer killing
women. Not breast or lung or colon but gynecology cancer. You might ask “what changed because we don’t really hear much of people dying of cervical
cancer today?” You’re right. Death from cervical cancer is relatively uncommon now and mainly due to the Pap smear screen test. Cervical cancer is
now found at a very early stage with the Pap smear and treated. Generally everything returns to normal and the whole abnormal Pap episode is mostly a
minor footnote in someone’s life story. Unfortunately, time travel is fiction so in order to wipe away a terrible cancer in the future in real life, everyone
has to be screened today because the chance for a time traveling do-over doesn’t exist. Therefore, skipping cancer screening is kind of like traveling back
in time because if you’re not screening then your risk will be more like it was a century ago. If you’re considering living in the past, I would suggest it is
much more enjoyable to dress up like someone from the roaring 1920s than to get cancer like someone from the 1920s. I would also like to put the word
out about our local Screven County Health Department which offers a women’s health program which can be little to no cost for those of lower income
and those who qualify. This is a great way to get some of these screenings done for those that are uninsured or underinsured. Additionally, Pap smears are
available at almost any primary care or OBGYN office.
