Oliver mourns Chief Pat Kile
Loss felt by county
Sarah Saxon
Reporter
On September 10, 2022, the City of Oliver lost longtime police
chief Wallace Patrick “Pat” Kile. He had served in that capacity for
the past 24 years.
Pat, the son of the late John Wallace Kile and the late Verna Lee
Parker Kile, spent over 50 years in law enforcement serving the
cities of Sardis, Sylvania, Pembroke, Oliver, and Rocky Ford.
When he came home, he became the Chief of the Sardis Police
Department, worked with both the Sylvania Police and Fire
Departments, became assistant Chief of Police at Pembroke Police
Department for 20 years, became the Chief of Police in Oliver
for 20 years. He is responsible for starting the Rocky Ford Police
Department.
Pat was a member of Little Ogeechee Baptist Church, the Georgia
Police Officers Association, Georgia Police Chiefs Association, and
the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7116 of Screven County.
Kile was a Sergeant in the Army and served four tours in Vietnam from 1967 - 1969.
According to his brother and Screven County Sheriff Mike Kile, “Pat spent his whole life in law
enforcement, 50 plus years and patrolled Highway 17 between Oliver and Rocky Ford. He usually
worked 12 - 14 hours a day and if any law enforcement in Screven County needed backup, he would
go and assist them.”
Melba Barber, the Clerk at the City of Oliver explained, “Pat was a hard worker, dedicated, very
dependable and was a good honest worker.” He recently retired in May of 2022, due to health
reasons.
A full military graveside service was held on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at the Screven County
Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Vernon Edenfield, officiating.
“Pat will be missed by everyone who knew him,” Sheriff Kile concluded.

“I love my seniors; they teach me a lot”
Cynthia Burgest has been the face of the Screven County Senior
and Wellness Center since February 2022. “I moved here from
New York when I was 21 years old,” Burgest explains. Her mother,
Sharon White is a Screven County native. Her father, Jimmy
Humphrey is from the big apple as well. “I moved down here with
my mom and married a local man.” She and husband Solomon
have been married 33 years and have 5 boys and 9 grandchildren.
“Most people remember me as the YMCA director. I held that job
from 2008-2020 and then Covid affected it. “I decided after two
years of retirement to do something. I couldn’t stay home all the
time,” She explains jokingly. She applied for the job and the rest is
history.
“Our old are our wisdom. We can learn a lot from them if we
take the time to listen,” She explains. The center is open Monday
thru Thursday from 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. “We offer games, crafts,
exercise machines, and if you just want to sit and watch T. V., we
offer that as well.” The center is a much-needed respite for those 6o and older who want to socialize with
others. Hot lunch is offered to participants for a donation of $1.25 per day. The program is made
possible by funding from Screven County.
Cynthia has big plans for the center, “I want to grow it with love. And we are always looking for
volunteers who want to change the lives of our county’s elderly.” The center is hosting a 1950’s
Senior Prom at the Cail Center on Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
The Center is located at 209 East Ogeechee Street and may be reached by dialing 912-564-7727.

State funeral planned for September lg

For 70 years Elizabeth Alexandra Mary has been known
throughout the world as Queen Elizabeth II. She has been the
face of Great Britain and the Monarchy since fulfilling her duty|
on the 6th of February 1952 following the death of her father
King George VI.
Elizabeth was bom in Mayfair, London as the first child
of the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI
and Queen Elizabeth). Her father succeeded to the throne in
1936 upon the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII,
making Elizabeth the heir apparent. When her father died in
February 1952, Elizabeth—then 25 years old—became queen
regent of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the
United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South
Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (known today as Sri Lanka), as
well as head of the Commonwealth. Elizabeth reigned as a
Constitutional Monarch through major political changes and
for many, the only monarch they have ever known.
Services for Queen Elizabeth II will take place over 10 days
of mourning as the world mourns with her family, including the’
former Prince of Wales, now King Charles III. Her Majesty’s state funeral will be held Monday, Sept. 19, 2022.
President Joe Biden and first Lady, Jill, will not travel with a delegation to the state funeral. The White House
confirmed that the United Kingdom’s invitation to the United States government was only for the President and
First Lady.
Each country was extended an invitation only for its head of state plus one guest. The White House typically
sends full delegations of leaders to the funerals of foreign leaders. The funeral is expected to be watched by millions.

FACING SPLIT

In January 2020, church leaders proposed a split
in the United Methodist Church Association (UMC),
to create a more traditional denomination, called the
Global Methodist
Church. Some
congregations left
the UMC to join
the Free Methodist
Church. Progressive
members created a
new denomination
in November 2020,
called Liberation
Methodist
Connexion.
Speculation
abounds as to
why the United
Methodist Church is
facing a major split.
However, according
to one local pastor
who didn’t wish to
be identified, "The
biggest problem
is that many churches have stopped following the Methodist Book of
Discipline." The Book of Discipline is a set of guidelines and rules that
the Methodist church is supposed to follow and abide by. “In some
cases, churches are trying to rewrite the Book of Discipline.”
Another issue that could cause a split is the more Conservative group
of Methodists do not allow the marriage of homosexual couples, nor do
they allow homosexual preachers. According to the local pastor, "Many
people label the Methodist church as anti-LBGTQ, but that is simply
not the case. The Methodist church must follow the Book of Discipline.
It is our order of operations. Everyone is welcome. There can just be
no homosexuals in leadership positions, according to our Book of
Discipline."
If a church decides to pull out of the UMC, the church will have to
provide their own preacher. Prior to 1996, a church had to purchase
its building and land from the UMC. That is not the case now. A
church seeking to become Independent will have to pay two years of
apportionments. The current year, and the following year in advance. A
portion of money would have to be paid to non-funded pensions. This
is for retired preachers and their widows. Finally, a small legal fee will
have to be paid. Most churches that pull out of the UMC are expected to
become Independent.
The talk of splitting is nothing new. The General Conference was
supposed to take place in 2020, but due to Covid-19, it did not happen.
Then, it was supposed to take place this year, but Covid-19 hit again,
causing Africa, the fastest growing in the world for Methodism, to be
unable to attend. The General Conference is scheduled to take place in
May 2024.
It is expected that there will be little to no change in the South Georgia
Conference in the near future. The South Georgia Conference will
remain Conservative. A preacher will not be sent to a church that the
church does not approve of.
According to the anonymous source, "There are more churches
than preachers right now. The bottom line is there will be no winners.
Conservatives will lose connectivity, while the Progressives will lose
many members and will not be able to maintain the churches they
inherit. The Global Methodist Church will not gain enough churches to
pick up the slack, as most will go Independent. All churches will suffer,
no matter the outcome. Especially the small ones. Some of the small
churches may very well close their doors."
The United Methodist Church was created 1968, but its roots go back
to the Revival Movement of John and Charles Wesley in the mid-1700's,
in the Church of England. Its many denominations are organized
into Conferences. In the United States, the UMC ranks as the largest
mainline Protestant denomination. It's the second largest Protestant
church after the Southern Baptist Convention, and the third largest
Christian denomination.

Sylvania local Brandon Martucci
worked last week to save the three murals
that have been hidden from human eyes for
several years. We can’t wait for everyone
to see them! Mr. William Moats has been a
wealth of information and we sure would
like to know more about these photos.
We hope to see Wiggins Construction get
started on the construction of two offices
and the closing in of the door that we share
with Ross Drugs this week! Thank you
Brandon for returning some exciting history
to Screven County.
