Four weeks into the
1992 state softball title
In 1992 Screven County High School won its first state championship of any sort
when the softball Lady Gamecocks of Head Coach Dawn Bloodworth defeated
Washington County 3- 2 on October 24. The Final Four that year was played, all in
one day, at the Al Bishop Complex in Marietta. The Times is chronicling the week
by week progress of the team. This is week four of the Times coverage and covers
games from Thursday, September 24 through Tuesday, September 29.
A day after the biggest sweep of the season over Vidalia, SCHS had a nonregion
13-0 win over Burke County. Danelle Toole had four hits and Cynthia Beasley
had three. Fredia Albright, Kiki Mobley, Jennifer Taylor, and Tasha Albright had
two hits each. The final regular season contests were a pair of 3AA East games in
Hazlehurst with Jeff Davis on Saturday, September 26. The results were 18-3 and
11-1 wins over the Lady Jackets. In the two games Mobley had six hits with both
Albrights having five each. With that the regular season ended at 14-1 and 8-0 in
subregion.
The region playoffs began on Tuesday, September 29. SCHS hosted 3AA West
runner-up West Laurens and the Lady Gamecocks swept the Lady Raiders 5-0 and
3-2. In the first game Fredia Albright, Mobley, Beth Thames, and Ginger Shields
had two hits each with Mobley having a pair of rbi. The nightcap at Pine Street saw
Mobley, Brandy Bragg, Toole, and Shields with two hits each and Tasha Albright
with three hits. In that second game SCHS stranded 12 runners.
GAMECOCKS FACE
SCREAMING DEVILS FOR
THE FIRST TIME EVER
Standing at 4-0 for the first time in five years, the SCHS gridiron Gamecocks
of Coach Ron Duncan will head to Warrenton this Friday for their first-ever
encounter with Warren County’s Screaming Devils. WCHS, of Class A Region 5
D-2, are vying for their fourth consecutive trip to at least the state quarterfinals.
Currently they stand at 2-2.
The Screaming Devils, once the Blue Devils (of Warrenton High School) when
coached by the legendary Luther Welsh, are coming off powerful wins over
Glascock County 52-36 and Hancock Central 54-14 in which they rushed for well
over 600 yards combined. They opened the season with losses to Montgomery
County and Johnson County.
Offensively the Devils run from a variety of formations, none of which include
the spread. They run from a version of the Wing-T, the Flex-Bone (without an
actual option), a full house backfield, and others. The common denominator is
they like to pound an opponent with “smash mouth” football and their running
game led by sophomore fullback Jackson Moss (6-0,195) who is a load to bring
down. Junior lefty quarterback Rodarius Moss can also throw the ball if need
be. Against Hancock last week he threw only at the end of the first half because
against the Bulldogs he never had to. On the other hand the first play of the game
against Glascock was
a TD pass.
For a quick history lesson on the Devils, the past three seasons the team has
advanced to the state quarterfinals before losing. Very impressively, all three of
their second round wins came on the road (they have advanced without winning
the region championship). Last year their second round win came in Pelham 32-7
the week after the Gamecocks fell 3-0 in the first round.
From 2012 to 2017 their teams recorded an 11-49 record. They have obviously
rebounded.
Current Bryan County coach Cherard Freeman took them to their quarterfinal
appearance in 2019 before he left for Pembroke while Steven Simpson is their
present coach.
