Hurricane Ian is expected to make landfall this week in
Florida as a Category 4 and is expected to intensify over the
warm Gulf of Mexico waters before striking the west central
coast of Florida today.
Ian is expected to start impacting our area Thursday although
uncertainty regarding the track remains high. Forecasters
are expecting 4-5 inches of rainfall for Screven and Jenkins
County.
Governor Brian Kemp ordered the activation of the State
Operations Center Monday in preparation of Ian impacting
parts of Georgia. Extreme South Georgia should start feeling
tropical storm force winds as early as today. The Screven
County EMA has been preparing for Screven County’s response

Each fall, students gather in
Perry, GA to participate in the
FFA Central Region Rally. At
the Rally, students can compete
in various events and participate
in leadership building activities.
Screven County High School
FFA was well represented and
won first place out of the Area 4
High Schools at the rally.
Screven County students
competed in a variety of events
including Horticulture Identification,
Opening Ceremony Competition, and
the Lumberjack Contest. Kerrigan
Bogart represented SCHS FFA well
and placed second in the Horticulture
Identification contest. Josh Patel,
Kaydance Bragg, Kerrigan Bogart,
Emma Polk, Nathan Mock, and
Brayton Knight won first place in the
Opening Ceremonies Competition
which consists of memorizing each
part of the FFA Opening Ceremonies
and reciting it in front of judges. The
students were judged based on their
memorization and confidence during
the contest. SCHS students also took
home first prize in the Lumberjack
Contest. These students were
Sadie Forehand, Holland Zipperer,
Payton Lee, and Brayton Knight.
Congratulations to these students for
representing our high school FFA
chapter.
Students also participated in the
Day of Service project by donating
construction supplies and household
items to the Rescue Mission of Middle
Georgia. Through the combined
efforts of Screven County members,
help from local churches and FFA
members from across the Central
Region, an entire 16-foot cargo trailer
was filled with supplies to help the
clients of the Rescue Mission.

Our New Home - week 4
Editor
This week, Wiggins Construction was back on
the job. The Shepherd’s Nook is starting to take
shape. Sam has already decorated the area in
his mind several times. We told Sarah that we
each must paint our own offices and since the
entire lobby is hers, she has work to do! Macay
with Rockstar Graphics has taken some photos
of the murals to start duplicating images like
the tree line and lawn to fill in some damaged
areas. Hopefully we start painting this week! At
least Debbie’s office and the conference room,

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month and for one local
family, very personal as well. A’Korre Lewis and his cousin,
Jeffrey Davis, decided to do their part and help raise awareness of
sickle cell disease with a walk. Lewis suffers from the disease. The
Health in Healing Community Event and Walk was organized not
only by the cousins but A’Korre’s mother, Cynthia Burns as well.
The event started at KJ’s Market, Saturday, 9/17, and the over
60 people walked to the Hawk Enrichment Center. “We would like
to thank Pastor Chris Thomas of the Center for allowing us to use
his building and for helping us plan the first annual event,” Burns
explained in a recent interview.
Sickle cell is a red blood cell disorder that is passed down from
parents. Sickle cell is not contagious. It is a disorder in which the
body produces red blood cells with an abnormal “sickle” shape,

FORMER GAMECOCK
COACH BILL FULCHER
DIES AT 88
Burton Kemp
Sports Editor
Arguably the most popular man
to ever roam the football sidelines
as the Head Football Coach of
Screven County High School,
William “Bill” Marcus Fulcher
III passed away last Friday at
the age of 88. With a resume that
would make most people blush,
Fulcher piloted the Gamecock
ship for just two years, 1960 and
1961, but left an impression that
still resonates with a generation
of locals whether they have
remained in the county or left for
other places.
Following another very popular
coach in Sandy Hershey, Fulcher
took the reins here in 1960 just
one year removed from a three
year stint with the Washington
Redskins. That first year SCHS
went 3-5-2 but in 1961 the
Gamecocks completed their
first ever 10-0 regular season,
matched only by the 2002 state
