Let God’s promises shine on your problems
Words of Encouragement

Oak Hill Church
“One Passion, One Goal”
What’s your goal in life? We can make small goals, such as starting a healthier eating habit or
losing 10 lbs, and we can make larger goals, like achieving a Doctoral degree or becoming the next
state senator. These small and large goals that I just gave as examples all deal with how we live our
lives, but don’t really consider the whole of our life. What’s the goal of your entire life? How do
you want to spend the lifetime that God has given to you?
The philosopher William James said, “The great use of life is to spend it for something
that outlasts it.” Samuel Brengle, the founder of the Salvation Army, said something similar, “One
of the outstanding ironies of history is the utter disregard of ranks and titles in the final judgement’s
men pass on each other. The final estimate of men shows that history cares not an iota for the rank
or title a man has borne, or the office he has held, but only the quality of his deeds and the character
of his mind and heart.” William James and Samuel Brengle would both agree that we can make the
best use of our life by using it to serve others, in a way that outlasts a single lifetime.
If I had to choose one great example of a life used to serve others, in a way that outlasts
a single lifetime, it would be the man or woman who cures cancer. This person would be world-
renowned and remembered for centuries for their ground-breaking, lifesaving, sorrow-stealing
discovery! As great an example as this one is, curing cancer, it's still not the greatest example of a
life well spent.
I am reminded of Martyn Lloyd Jones, who as a young man was trained in medicine as a
doctor and served as an assistant to the Royal Physician and London. However, God called him to
preach, and he surrendered to that call, leaving medicine to become one of the greatest preachers
of the 20th century. As a doctor he healed a man’s body, but as a pastor, he spoke to their eternal
soul. Curing cancer might give a man 10, 20, or even 50 more years, but what is that in the grand
scope of eternity? The greatest use of a life well lived is to give it to Jesus, to walk with Him and
be used by Him, in His will and purposes.
Count Nicholas Von Zinzendorf was another young man called to the ministry. He was a
rich, young ruler with wealth and power in his future, and all he had to do was reach out and receive
it. When God called him to start a church, he obeyed, starting the Moravian church, and sending
out missionaries worldwide. The Moravaian church was known for one interesting statistic - they
had three times as many members in their churches overseas than they did at home. When asked
why he had given up riches and royalty for Jesus, Zinzendorf answered, “I have but one passion;
it is He, He alone.”
One more example, the apostle Paul. He was another young man with power, authority,
and prestige in his future, as he ascended the ranks of the Pharisees like a shooting star. But when
Jesus confronted him on the road to Damascus, his life was never the same again! Paul became one
of the greatest missionary church planters the world has ever seen and wrote more of the books of
the Bible than anyone else. In Philippians 3:7-10, he gives us a glimpse into his heart, and why he
lived how he lived - “But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss because
of Christ. More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of
knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider
them as dung, so that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own
from the law, but one that is through faith in Christ—the righteousness from God based on faith.
My goal is to know him..
What’s your goal? What’s your passion? Anything less than Jesus can be a life well-
lived, but it will never be the life best lived.
