Delia Mobley, Executive Director of
the Open Hearts Community Mission in
Statesboro was the guest speaker at the
Sylvania Rotary Club meeting on Thursday,
October 6. She was introduced by Sylvania
First United Methodist Church preacher
Dorsia Atkinson, who is also the Chairman
of the Board of Directors for OHCM.
The mission houses up to 32 men and
single women with children and is funded
by monies donated by the community and
funding from area churches. Mobley stated
that “so far, they have had 86 people go
through the program and are still thriving.
They do not receive any governmental
funding.”
Their annual fundraiser, 5K Chocolate
Run, is held each February and averages Delia Mobley, Executive Director of Open Hearts
between 600 to 700 runners, with the Community Mission and Dorsia Atkinson, Chairman

“The Mission shares the Gospel of Jesus
Christ by extending a hand-up, not a hand-out to our friends and neighbors.
Residents of the Mission must have a job,” explains Mobley.
“If they do not have a job, their first priority is to get a job. In the meantime,
they must workday labor.” All net earnings are deposited into the resident’s
personal savings account.
The OHCM serves Bulloch, Screven, and Jenkins counties.
The Mission does not provide clinical services nor offer convalescence services.

You’re Just Not My Type”
, Neighbors, in keeping with a “Spooky” October
theme we’ll move the discussion from blood
pressure to blood type. Typically the term “Blood
type” refers to the ABO system for typing blood to
be used for blood transfusions.
Despite human blood being generally
the same in everyone, differences in
the proteins on the outside of blood
cells, called antigens, prevent blood
from being universally interchangeable/
able to transfuse between people. If
incompatible blood was to be given, the
recipient would experience a whole body
severe activation of their immune system call
anaphylaxis. In anaphylaxis, the immune system of
the person receiving the blood would identify the
donated blood as foreign. This would trigger life
threatening inflammation.
The ABO system is a way to group blood by
compatibility. This allows quicker access for
someone in need of a blood product which is likely
compatible. There are eight possible major blood
types in the system derived from combinations
of the A, B and Rh antigen. The blood type O
is the absence of the A and B antigen. The Rh is
either present or absent which is noted as positive
or negative. Thus O negative blood has no major
antigens and potentially could be given to anyone.
It’s known as the universal donor. This makes it
great for emergency situations, unfortunately only
6-7% of the population is O negative. AB positive
is the universal recipient as it can potentially
receive any blood type.
There are two other times blood type becomes
important. One situation occurs in pregnancy.
If the mother is Rh negative and the baby is Rh
positive, a medication is used in situations of
maternal fetal blood interaction, typically birth,
to prevent the maternal immune system from
developing antibodies against future pregnancies
of Rh positive children.
The other situation is organ donation. Atransplanted
organ must also be compatible with the recipient’s
immune
