Door Knock Recipes
with Talmadge Firi©i!
I found this recipe when going thru an old cookbook
that was given to me, it was handwritten on a piece of
paper. I thought the name of it was kind of eerie and
funny at the same time. Sometimes it is amazing what you find when not looking
for it.
Upon doing some research, this is a cake recipe that families would take to loved
ones who had a death in the family. One notable ingredient is missing from the
recipe, EGGS. I was told that this is also known as Cemetery Cake.
Funeral Cake
3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
6 tbs cocoa
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla extract
2/3 cup vegetable oil
2 tbs vinegar
2 cups cold water
Beat all ingredients together until
smooth. Pour into ungreased 9x13 inch
baking pan and bake in pre heated oven at 350 degrees oven for 30 minutes. Icing
is optional.
Cinnamon Bun Dessert
This is a quick and easy dessert to make for just
about any occasion.
2 cans Cinnamon rolls quartered
1 can apple filing
V2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts if desired
Mix all ingredients in a bowl.
Pour into a greased or sprayed 9x13 baking
pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
Drizzle the icing from the cans and put on
top of the baked rolls when it comes out of
the oven.
Serve in the baking pan.

Neighbors, October is breast cancer awareness month.
Breast cancer is such a common form of cancer that
regular screening needs to be on everyone’s to-do list
of important things. The risk over a women’s lifetime is
13% or 1 out of every 8 women. The reason screening
matters is it provides the best opportunity to detect the
cancer at its earliest stage. Early cancer frequently has
no symptoms but typically is very treatable. Early-stage
breast cancer has a 99% 5-year survival rate! When
found early and treated early, life after cancer is often
able to return to back to “normal.” This is unfortunately
much less common for late-stage cancer. Early detection
and treatment produce better results and is also true for
other types of cancer such as lung cancer or prostate
cancer.
The fact is we are all made of billions of cells.
Before they can divide into new cells, they must copy
miles of DNA. Our body is very good at making DNA
copies but inevitably mistakes can occur in the DNA.
Sometimes the mistakes are harmless but sometimes
it becomes the start of cancer. Since we are made
of billions of constantly dividing cells, some of us
will develop cancer. The problem is getting cancer
is unpredictable. This is where cancer screening
guidelines give concrete options to address cancer’s
fickle nature. Cancer unfortunately eventually shows
itself whether we undergo screenings or not. However routine
cancer screening allows someone to know about their cancer in
the possibly earliest, typically asymptomatic stage. This is when
a cancer “cure” is much more frequently achieved.
What can we do about cancer? Daily exercise and antioxidants
found in fruits and veggies reduce the risk of cancer. Also
maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking reduce the risk of
cancer. The age and time to begin cancer screening is best made
with your healthcare provider; however, the American Cancer
Society recommends most women start annual Mammograms
at age 45 with an option of earlier screening starting at age 40.
Additionally prostate and colon cancers screenings typically
start at age 45. Lung cancer screenings for people with a
20 pack/year smoking history begins around 50. However,
these are general recommendations and there are caveats for
situations like family history of cancer or other higher risk
cancer situations. Best to check with your health care provider
and they will put you on the right path.
