LADY
GAMECOCKS
RETAKE
REGION
CROWN,
HEAD TO
STATE
With a region runner-up finish a year ago after
nine consecutive region championships, the
Screven County High School Lady Gamecock
cross country team of Anna Canetto cruised to
the Class A Region 3 Di title at the Black Creek
Scout Reservation last Tuesday afternoon to
return a sense of normalcy to the sport. The Red
and White, along with runner-up Metter, third
place Bryan County, and fourth place Claxton
will be part of the Class A Di state meet at
Carrollton on Friday morning, November 4,
beginning at 9:45 am.
Said Canetto afterwards, “I have said all year,
‘start strong, finish stronger.’ It happened
when it mattered most. I told them back in June
to trust the process. I am so glad that they did.”
After winning the Region 3AA title 2012-2015,
the 4AA title 2016-2019, an d the 3A title in 2020,
the Lady Gamecocks “slipped” to 3A runner-up
status in a 40-45 loss to Claxton at the BCSR in
2021. Last week, with only two runners in the
lineup from a season ago, SCHS left no doubt
that the team was back in championship form
with a group of finishers that included three
freshmen. That trio of ninth graders each
finished in the top six to help catapult the team
to victory.
Leading the way was region champion, and
freshman, Sadie Beth Sell (24:44.43) who took
the title by slightly better than 20 seconds over
Metter’s Tyra Howard (25:04.56). Behind the
duo taking third was SCHS freshman Annaston
Dotschay (25:23.64), SCHS junior Ashley
Langley (25:31.07) at fourth, and Metter’s Eileen
Santiago (25:35.37) was fifth. Close behind
Santiago taking sixth was the other Lady
Gamecock freshman Kaydance Bragg (25:48.31).
Rounding out the SCHS score of 29 was senior
Lynnlie Rountree at 15 th (27:48.46). Langley
and Rountree were the only veterans for the
home team and both drastically improved their
time over a year ago, though not necessarily their
place. A season ago Langley was sixth at 28:02
while Rountree was 13 th but at 29:47. From top
to bottom and with 35 total runners, the 2022
field was much deeper than the field of 2021.
Team scores for the day were the SCHS 29
(1, 3, 4, 6,15) followed by Metter’s 54 (2, 5, 7,
18, 22), Bryan County’s 67 (9,10,13,14, 21),
defending champion Claxton’s 96 (8,16,17,
23, 3 2 )> Savannah’s 115 (11, 20, 26, 27, 31), and
Woodville- Tompkins’ 118 (12,19, 28, 29, 30).
At the state meet a season ago Claxton took an
overall 13 th while SCHS was 14 th . In the boys’
race Savannah High’s Shone Ruth (19:17.92)
and Woodville-Tompkins’ Isaiah McGuire
(19:22.51) battled for first with Ruth coming out
on top. Claxton’s Tigers were the overall region
champions with a score of 45 to Savannah High’s
53. Woodville-Tompkins was third with 68,
Bryan County was fourth with 79, and Metter
had 87 for fifth. The top four schools advance to
the state meet in Carrollton. The Class A Di boys
will be the first to race at Carrollton beginning at
9:00 am on Friday, November 4.

Senior Lynnlie Rountree improved her time two
minutes over last year's region meet and claimed a
15th place finish (photo by Vette Rountree).
SCMS TENNIS AND CHEERLEADING WINDING DOWN
In their next to last week of the regular season the SCMS tennis team won a
pair of matches at 5-0 and will play their last match at Metter this afternoon. The
tennis region tournament begins on October 8 at the SCHS courts. In the mean
time the competitive cheerleaders took a fourth in their final competition Saturday
in Swainsboro and their region competition was yesterday (November 1), also in
Swainsboro.
Tennis rolled past ECI in a home and home series in Twin City on October 24
and Sylvania on October 26 all by 5-0 margins. With the same lineup in each the
girls saw Caroline Boswell, Harper Sheppard, and Ryland Reynolds go 2-0 in
singles and the teams of Conley Ann White/Lilly McAfee and Aleyiyanna Blount/
A’Chanti Middleton go 2-0. For the boys the lineup varied some. In singles JD
Hall and Luke Hall were 2-0 while Noah Boykin and Xander Collins were 1-0. In
doubles the four teams were Whit Morgan/Dylan Dickerson, Kale Causey/Lance
Daniell, Morgan/Collins, and Morgan/Collins, and Dickerson/ Rece Chandler.
Each team was 1-0.
In their final competition the cheer squad took fourth from a field of Swainsboro
(1), Dodge County (2), Calvary (3), JR Trippe (Vidalia), Savannah Christian,
Toombs County, Jeff Davis, Metter, and Dublin. The squad actually tied Calvary
for third but Calvary had higher execution points. SCMS defeated both Metter and
Toombs who were the only schools in the competition from the Southeast Georgia
Middle School League.
