October is Pastor Appreciation month. While you may be reading this at the
beginning of November, I have a final word of encouragement to share with
Pastors from John the Baptist. If you are reading this as a church member,
consider your pastor as you read -1 hope it will give your insight into his
calling and will give you cause to thank God for him, and to go and encourage
him yourself.
John 3:27-30 - John responded, “No one can receive anything unless it has
been given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am
not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of him.’ 29 He who has the bride is
the groom. But the groom’s friend, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices
greatly at the groom’s voice. So, this joy of mine is complete. 30 He must
increase, but I must decrease.”
John the Baptist’s response above was to a problem his disciples brought
to him in v.22-27 - the crowds were leaving to follow someone else! John’s
ministry had experienced great popularity as the crowds went out to the
Jordan river wilderness area to hear his great sermons and see the baptisms,
but now they were turning away from him to see this new upstart, Jesus.
Baptism numbers were down, and the disciples were leaving John’s ministry.
In fact, his disciples went so far as to complain in v.27 “the whole world
is going to Him [Jesus]!” What was John’s response? Gratitude, joy, and
humility.
#1 - Be thankful! John said in v.27, “No one can receive anything unless
it has been given to him from heaven.” It is only by God’s grace that I have
anything good. From the breath in our lungs, to the number of members in
any given church, all are gifts from God that we are to be thankful for. We
would have nothing without Him. Nothing belongs to us! I can’t be like Andy
in Toy Story and write my name on anything (if you don’t get it, google it).
Everything is given to us by God - because everything, and everyone belongs
to Him.
#2 - Be joyful! In v.28-29 John gives a beautiful illustration of church
ministry, and pastoral ministry. John says that he is only a groomsman
rejoicing at the wedding between the Bride and the Groom. In this illustration,
the Bride is the church and the groom is Jesus. John is explicitly saying that
it is his job only to unite the bride and groom in glorious union. Every pastor
should pray for the same mindset as John the Baptist, to realize we are only
groomsmen, playing a part in uniting Jesus’s church to Himself. John said
presenting the church to Jesus made his joy complete.
#3 - Be decreasing! In v.30 John makes one of the greatest statements made
by a man in all of scripture, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” The
church, my community, and the world needs much more of Jesus and far less
of me. He must increase in every way - name and fame, knowledge of Him,
love of Him, and obedience to Him. Implicit in John’s statement is this truth,
He can increase, or I can increase, but both cannot be true. Which one will it
be in your life? Must He increase or must you increase?
I told my church yesterday that
if I serve Jesus well among them
as their Pastor - they are to give
glory to God. I also told them that
when my mistakes, my struggle
with sin, my evident weaknesses,
my offenses and overlooking of
individuals or families, and my
failures cause them hurt - that they
are to be gloriously reminded that
I am not what they need. What
they need is Jesus! Pastor, what
you need is not validation through
numbers, success, or compliments
- you need Jesus. Church member,
what you need is not a super pastor
- you need Jesus. And for you, the
unchurched, the hurting, or the
confident and self-sufficient one
who says I need nothing - what you
need is Jesus.
