Page 12 - Wednesday, November 9, 2022 The Sylvania Times thesy lvaniatimes .com CHEERLEADERS TAKE SECOND IN AREA, HEAD TO MACON SATURDAY Throwing an Area 2-A runner-up performance at Ola High School last Saturday, the SCHS Lady Gamecock cheerleaders of Cindy LeMaster ended a two year absence from the state finals and will head to the Macon Centreplex this Saturday for the GHSA Class A championships. The destination of the finals and the venue have changed, it is no longer the Civic Center in Columbus as it was seemingly forever, it is now the Macon Centreplex. That does not matter for it is the state finals. On Saturday morning the doors open at 9:00 with performances to begin at 10:00. Tickets are $15 per session (for SCHS Day 2, Session 1) and all must be purchased at GoFan. This season marked the first time since SCHS dropped to Class A (2020) that there were Areas for competition. For the past two seasons all public Class A squads met at one place with the top eight advancing to the finals. At Ola Saturday four Area crowns were awarded with the top 16 scores going to Macon. This organization is similar to wrestling. Final standings for Area 2-A were Schley County with 68.5, SCHS with 65, Johnson County with 64.5, ECI with 59, and Metter with 55. Only Metter did not advance to the finals this Saturday. Interestingly all save champion Schley County were at Swainsboro last week with the Red and White defeating ECI and J0C0 but falling to Metter. In McDonough the Lady Gamecocks had their highest score of the year with a 27.5 on the Category C (Partner Stunts/Pyramids) score sheet. The improvement came in the execution of their pyramids. Never had their score been higher than a six and they reached an eight (of 10) Saturday. That, combined with a two point deduction given to Johnson County, gave SCHS their runner-up trophy. Metter, which had done so well in Swainsboro, was hit with a seven point deduction which included a tumbling fall, and missed Macon. The highest score for any area for the Red and White was a 6/6 for degree of difficulty for jumps. The 16 advancing squads and their scores were Armuchee with 88.5, Lake Oconee Academy with 87.5, Pepperell with 86.5, Swainsboro with 84, Bleckley County with 83, Commerce with 81.5, Coosa with 77, Trion with 75.5, Dade County with 74, Bacon County with 71, Schley County with 66.5, East Laurens with 65.5, SCHS with 65, Johnson County with 64.5, Mt. Vernon with 60, and ECI with 59. The Lady Gamecocks have met seven of those during the season. Of the four areas the SCHS Area 2 advanced four squads as did Area 1 while Area 5 had five, and Area 3 had three. Regaining their region title after a runner-up finish in 2021, the team easily won the Class A Region 3 Di title on October 25. The title was the team’s 10 th in 11 years. Friday the top runner for SCHS from among 181 participants was freshman Sadie Beth Sell who took 81st with a time of 25:59.29. She was followed by junior Ashley Langley (92 nd 26:31.27), freshman Kaydance Bragg (94 th , 26:39.64), freshman Annaston Dotschay (110 th, 27:47.24), and senior Lynnlie Rountree (121 st, 28:46.24). Bleckley County was easily the state champion of Di with a final score of 60 (1, 6, 13,15, and 25). Lady Royal Ella Gibbs was the individual champion with a time of 18:57-53- Second place Paideia had 106. Five of the top ten teams were private schools, who at the Class A level a year ago, had their own classification. Eight of the top ten individual runners were from public schools. Of the 25 teams who ran SCHS finished 16 th (471), Bryan County was 18 th (546), Metter was 19 th (547), and Claxton was 23 rd (649).
