thesy lvaniatimes .com The Sylvania Times Wednesday, November 9, 2022 - Page 13 SOFTBALL PLAYERS GARNER POSTSEASON RECOGNITION A quartet of SCHS Lady Gamecock softball players garnered postseason honors last week when a pair was named First Team All Region 3A and another pair was named Second Team All Region 3A. Both sophomore Julia Dews and Ashley Stanley were named First Team by region coaches and sophomore Lauren McMillan and senior Shay Sasser were named Second Team by the same group. Stanley and Dews were the top hitters for the Region 3-A Di runners-up Lady Gamecocks. Stanley, who played virtually every position in the infield as well as catcher during the season, led the team with a .430 average (34-79) as well as being the team leader in RBI with 21. Dews, who was voted Second Team a season ago, also played around the softball horn, pitching some as well. She was second on the team with a .348 average (31-89) and second on the team in RBI with 19. The senior Sasser has previously made First Team All Region 4AA in 2019 and 3A in 2021 while in 2020 she was Second Team All 3A. This season she hit .314 (22- 70) while being the primary catcher during the year. In four seasons she had a batting average of .378 (111-294) with 95 RBI. McMillan became the number one pitcher during the season and logged 86.1 innings and a 6-6 record with an ERA of 3.32. She had 78 strikeouts. Region and post season Regional Champion Bryan County dominated the post season honors with four First Teamers as well as the Coach of the Year in Jason Roundtree, Player of the Year in Bekah Johnson, Pitcher of the Year in Hayden Joyner, and Offensive Player of the Year Mackenzie Mobley. Conner Miller of Claxton was the Defensive Player of the Year. SCHS senior Emma Jones, who missed the season, was a two time Region Offensive Player of the Year. Jacob is an 11th grader at Screven County High School. He plays tuba in the SCHS Symphonic Band. Prior to this year, Jacob served as a member of the Logistics Team and played sousaphone in the marching band. He was selected to the GMEA District 1 Honor Band last year as a 10th grader; this year he hopes to advance to the All-State round. At this time, Jacob is unsure about which college he will attend. Last Saturday, the Sylvania Junior Women’s Club sponsored a Kids Super Safety Event on the courthouse lawn. There were various information booths available about child safety. Everyone received a hotdog and chips furnished by the Sylvania Junior Women’s Club. Kids had the opportunity to plant wildflowers, draw pictures and jump in the bouncy house.
