“Duck Dogs”
Psalm 46:10 - “Be still, and know that I am God.”
Duck hunting dogs are majestic working dogs. They are bird
dogs that do the majority of their work in the water. They sit still in the
cold and wet, while men and women with guns blast ducks from the
sky. Then at the command of their master, they run, swim, and slog to
go retrieve ducks. These dogs have to be comfortable in the water, in
a boat, in a truck, and around shotguns. They have to recognize ducks,
retrieve ducks, leam the non-retrieve, and know the hand signals given
by their master to lead them to a duck that only he, not the dog, can
see.
My friend (and personal expert source on duck hunting dogs)
Josh Cammack says that training dogs for duck hunting takes any
where from nine months to one year with a special trainer. However,
the most important part of their training starts at the puppy stage. See,
duck dog training starts with basic obedience - sit and stay, and come
on command. If a dog can’t obey these basics, he will never be good
for duck hunting Josh says, “These dogs have to be willing, submis
sive, and they have to trust their master.” Just like duck dogs, God
trains us in basic obedience. We have to learn to be willing, submis
sive, and to trust our Master. We have to be able to recognize and listen
to His voice.
To teach us to recognize and listen to His voice, God tells us
“Be still, and know that I am God.” Sit, stay, and keep your eyes on
Me. It is hard for us to be still! The native Hawaiians coined a word
for the white mainlanders who started arriving in Hawaii - Haole.
Haole means “no breath”. The story goes that they gave them the name
“no breath” because they kept so busy as to be out of breath. Does
Haole describe you? Are you out of breath from a busy life? Here’s my
encouragement to you today - get out your bible, be still, and listen to
God’s voice.

winter are for resting and
preparing for the hard work
of summer. This is true
even for those of us who
work jobs far removed
from the farm. Non
farm work allows you to
rely on others to grow
and preserve your food,
which you then pick up
from the grocery store
during the year.
So what’s the
connection between
producing food and
DST? Most agricultural
workers are seen as
being against DST
when actually it is the
changing back and
forth between the
DST and standard
time that they oppose.
Time changing messes
up a farm’s carefully
crafted schedules. For
creatures that can’t read
a clock, animals have
a keenly honed sense
of time and tend to get
upset when food or
milking is too early or
too late. Field workers’
schedules have to be
adjusted too, and on
a big farm that is time
consuming.
Here on the homestead
the time change
means a few weeks of
generalized grumpiness
and confusion. If you
feed goats early, they
still want dinner at the
regular time. If you feed
them late, you have to
listen to them bellowing
for an hour till food
shows up. I’m with the
goats and the farmers
on this. Pick a time
standard and stick with
it!
