BASKETBALL SPLITS OPENING GAMES IN
GAMECOCK BORDER WAR TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT
Opening the season by hosting their own Border War Tip-Off Tournament on November 21 and 22, the SCHS Lady Gamecock and Gamecock basketball teams of
Stephanie Davis and Arthur Davis respectively split those opening pair of contests. Each defeated Battery Creek SC on Monday night and fell to Hilton Head SC in very
winnable games on Tuesday night. All games were at the Harold Lee Scott Gymnasium. Claxton’s girls and Jenkins County’s boys were the other participating teams in
the tournament. Those Jenkins County boys and the Hilton Head girls each went 2-0 in the tournament while the Battery Creek girls and boys were o-2.
Claxton’s girls were l-i. The SCHS teams hosted Burke County last night and will travel to Twin City this Friday for an encounter with last year’s region foe ECI.
Savannah High will be here on December 6 for the Class A Region 3 Di opener. It will be the first-ever trip by the Blue Jacket cage squads to Sylvania.

LADY GAMECOCKS DOWN
BATTERY CREEK IN OVERTIME
In their season opening win over Battery Creek SC the Lady Gamecocks had
to overcome not only a tenacious Battery Creek defense that forced them into
35 turnovers but also a night that saw them shoot well under 20% from the
field. It was a game of streaks early on. Out of the gate SCHS took a 6-4 lead
only to have the Lady Dolphins finish the first stanza on a 7-0 run to lead 11-6.
The Red and White opened the second quarter with an effort that limited BCHS
to a single field goal (withi:45 left in the half) as they scored 11 to lead 17-13 at
intermission. With 3:01 left in the third the home team was up 20-15 only to
trail 21-20 after three.
The fourth quarter saw several early lead changes with BCHS reaching a 29-25
lead with just 2:46 remaining. Both teams missed several shots underneath,
several free throws, and committed several turnovers over the remainder of
the game. SCHS drew with two when Olivia Jackson scored with 1:59. Jackson
scored again with just one second remaining sending the game into overtime.
In the OT CeCe Roberson hit two free throws to make it 31-29. Ray’ven Tyler
hit two free throws to make it 33-32 and with just :39 left Roberson made it
35-32 for the final margin. No one hit for double figures as Tyler and Asia
Roberson had nine points each. Ta’myia Tyler had 15 rebounds and Asia
Roberson 10.
A 2-23 night from behind the three point line doomed the Lady Gamecocks in
the second night of the tournament as they fell to Hilton Head’s Lady Seahawks
38-33. The game may have hinged on a pair of very ill advised trey attempts in
the waning seconds of the first half. Leading 20-17 SCHS fell behind 21-20 at
the buzzer with each Seahawk basketball coming on a fast break after the two
shots. The Red and White never regained the lead. Trailing by as many as eight
at 30-22 late in the third, SCHS pulled within 31-28 halfway through the final
stanza and 36-33 with just :55 remaining. That was as close as it got late.
For the second night in a row Asia Roberson was the leading scorer with
20 points. She combined that with 10 rebounds for a double-double. CeCe
Roberson had ten points to give the team 30 of its 33 points. For Davis there
must be more scoring out of the remainder of the lineup.

Their opener against Battery Creek SC saw the Gamecocks come out cold, but
hang around until things heated up. The lineup for the most part featured either,
three football players who began practice two days prior on Saturday, or three
freshmen playing in their first regular season varsity game. The football players
were Dylaun Adams, Dre Flowers, and TaCorey Grant while the freshmen were
Deon Dixon, Kashard Prescott (also a football player), and Jase Hughes. SCHS
trailed 9-7 after one, 22-19 after two, and 33-32 after three. In the fourth quarter
the Red and White took the lead early and then held the Dolphins to just four total
points to pull to a comfortable final at 43-37. Adams had 24 while Prescott had six
rebounds with Dixon and Jayden Adams having five each. Flowers and Adams had
five assists each.
Tuesday night the Roosters go off to a hot start against the Seahawks of Hilton
Head SC, leading 17-13 after the first eight minutes. Adams had eight of those first
quarter points and Grant four. Things cooled down somewhat in a second quarter
that saw Hilton Head hit a buzzer beating trey to take a 27-26 lead at intermission.
With the new 35-second clock implemented by the GHSA for this season, the
Gamecocks had the opportunity to run out the clock but could not.
The Seahawks pushed their lead to 31-27 quickly in the third stanza and the
Gamecocks were never ahead again. Three times in the quarter SCHS cut their
deficit to two points, but never tied, eventually trailing 41-35 at the quarter’s end.
Early on the fourth quarter was horribly frustrating as at one 45-second span the
Red and White missed four straight free throws and three consecutive layups.
The closest they got in the final stanza was to within three at 47-44 with 3:40
remaining but they never got over the hump.
For the second night in a row Adams was the lone Rooster in double figure as he
hit for 21. He was also the leading rebounder with nine while Grant had six. No
one had more than two assists or steals.
