AND NOW WE THANK YOU, OUR GOD, AND PRAISE YOUR GLORIOUS NAME.
Words of Encouragement
Pastor Joshua Johnson
Oak Hill Church
“Advent”
The Christmas season is also the season of Advent. Advent is all about hope.
The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival,” and it is traditionally a time of
expectation, waiting, anticipation, and longing.
Advent is not just an extension of Christmas—it is a season that links the past,
present, and future. Advent offers us the opportunity to share in the ancient
longing for the coming of the Messiah, to celebrate His birth, and to be alert for
His second coming.
Advent looks back in celebration at the hope fulfilled in Jesus’s coming, while
at the same time looking forward in hopeful and eager anticipation to the
coming of Christ’s kingdom when He returns for His people. During Advent we
wait for both—it’s an active, assured, and hopeful waiting.
Far too often, our Christmases become frenzied and overwhelmingly busy.
We pack our schedules with so many seasonal happenings. Stores start pushing
Christmas decor and merchandise and fueling a gift-buying frenzy in October.
Our season of peace is quickly overloaded as a season of stress.
But Advent is an opportunity to set all that aside. Advent is a time to prepare
our hearts and help us place our focus on a far greater story than our own - the
story of God’s redeeming love for our world. It’s not a season of pretending to be
happy or covering up the pain or hardships we have experienced during the past
year or continue to experience - it is a season of digging deep into the reality of
what it means that God sent His Son into the world to be Immanuel, God With
Us.
So wherever you are on your level of stress, or anxiety and uncertainty,
wherever you are on your own spiritual journey, I invite you into this season of
Advent. We’ve been given the opportunity to rediscover Christmas - hope, peace,
joy, love, and eternal life found in Jesus Christ, Immanuel, God With Us!

Belle, returns home for
Christmas after two years
A woman in Powys, Wales was
heartbroken when her dog was taken out
of her fenced yard two years ago. Trisha
Joseph, the owner, never gave up looking
for six-year-old Belle, a beautiful springer
spaniel. Trish posted on more than 500
Facebook groups, and put up signs all
around town looking for Belle. Then two
years later this past Friday, one of the
group members spotted the dog being put
up for sale 75 miles away. All of her hard work had paid off! An 18-year-old had
kept Belle for six months and was selling her. Actually, he was shocked to find
out the pup was stolen. But, now Belle is back home with Trisha right here before
Christmas. What a great heartwarming story! Congratulations BELLE!!
Waits gives Rotary update on events
Sarah Saxon
Reporter
At the Rotary Club meeting, Grace
Waits, the Screven County Chamber
of Commerce Director spoke to the
Sylvania Rotary Club members about
the various upcoming activities.
Waits discussed the Victorian
Christmas Extravaganza that will
be held on December 10 at 3 p.m. in
downtown Sylvania. The Christmas
tree lighting ceremony will be held
after the parade. Of special interest
is the observance of the 175th
anniversary of the City of Sylvania.
“With the assistance of the Sylvania
Times, the Chamber is putting
out a Community Guide that will
let newcomers and tourists know
what Sylvania has to offer,” Grace
explained. “This is the first year we
are doing this and hope to make it an
annual event.”
The annual chamber banquet has
been scheduled for January 27, 2023,
at Sylvania First Baptist Church,
