LADY GAMECOCKS, GAMECOCKS SPLIT OPENING REGION
CONTESTS; CONTINUE BUSY SCHEDULE TO HOLIDAYS
With no more Region 3-A D1 games until January 6, both the Lady Gamecocks of Stephanie
Davis and the Gamecocks of Arthur Davis earned a split in their first pair of region games with
the girls adding a win over nonregion Jenkins County and the boys adding a loss. For the Lady
Gamecocks there was a 53-37 win over Savannah High and a 52-39 loss to Claxton in their
region contests while the Gamecocks fell to Savannah High 57-40 and defeated Claxton 43-40.
The December 10 trip across Horse Creek netted the girls a 56-35 win and the boys a 55-39 loss.
Following the week’s action the Lady Gamecocks were 4-3 and the Gamecocks 3-4. A
December 8 game with Estill SC was cancelled when the Gators were unable to secure a bus
driver for the trip. This week the Red and White hosted Portal yesterday and are scheduled to go
to Estill SC tomorrow evening before hosting ECI this Friday, December 16 as well as Jenkins
County on Saturday, December 17. Following the Jenkins County contest there will be no more
basketball until Bryan County is here on Friday, January 6.
LADY GAMECOCKS STAND AT 4-3, TAKE DOWN
SAVANNAH 53-37
Taking two of three games last week the Lady Gamecocks hosted Savannah High on
Tuesday with a region-opening 53-37 win highlighted by a 20-5 first quarter which provided
almost the entire final margin of victory. The hot start was catapulted by ten points by Rayven
Tyler and six by Asia Roberson. After the first quarter Savannah High was never able to cut its
deficit to less than double digits. The closest things ever got was eleven and the last time it was
that close was at 42-31. At that point the Tylers, Ta’myia and Rayven, each hit two free throws
and the matter was sealed. Rayven Tyler finished with 16 points and six steals while Asia
Roberson had another double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The team followed their Savannah region win with a trip to Claxton to face their chief
rivals for the 2021-22 region title. Claxton jumped to a 15-5 lead after the opening stanza and the
Lady Gamecocks, again plagued by poor shooting, were never able to climb back into the game
as they fell 52-39. Principal among the team’s problems was a woeful 4-16 performance from the
foul line. CeCe Roberson had 12 points and Ta’Miyah Tyler had 10. Rayven Tyler had nine
rebounds.
In Millen on Saturday night for a nonregion game it was the second quarter and not the
first that catapulted, or doomed as in Claxton, the Red and White. With Jenkins County hitting
for four of their night’s five treys the home team took a 14-12 lead after eight minutes. The Lady
Gamecocks righted things in an incredible 21-2 second quarter. The game was never close again
in their 56-35 win. Asia Roberson scored 11 of her game-high 25 points in the pivotal second
quarter. On the night Olivia Jackson hit for a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds.
CeCe Roberson had five assists and six steals.
GAMECOCKS HOLD OFF CLAXTON 43-40 FOR
REGION WIN, STAND AT 3-4
After a region opening loss to Savannah High on December 6 the Gamecocks went to
Claxton hoping to even their region record. They did. On the strength of an 18-4 first quarter
run the Roosters took a very important 43-40 win. The all important first quarter saw every
starter score points. Dylaun Adams had five with TaCorey Grant and Jaden Amett having four
each to lead the way. In contrast to the 18 point opening stanza a five point fourth quarter almost
cost the Red and White the game, but they held on. Amett and Dre Flowers scored 10 each with
Flowers also leading in rebounds with six.

win over visiting Savannah High.

Legendary Savannah High made its first ever trip to SCHS on December 6. The Blue
Jackets jumped to a 21-4 first quarter lead but the Roosters never quit. Starting the third quarter
with an 11-0 ran, the Red and White pulled within 30-24 on a Prescott basket with 3:01
remaining in the quarter. Unfortunately the Blue and White went on a 10-3 run to close the third
quarter at 40-27. The Gamecocks did pull back to 46-37 with 3:10 remaining but the final was
57-40. Adams finished with 15 and Amett 11.
Hoping to follow up their significant region win over Claxton with a nonregion win at
Jenkins County on Saturday night, the hope never materialized. Offensively the Red and White
never got into a good flow, scoring just 16 points in the first half to trail 25-16, and could not
seriously threaten the Eagles down the stretch in their 55-39 loss. Grant had nine rebounds and
Adams eight with Flowers having four assists and four steals. Adams was the lone rooster in
double figures with just 10.
