Wreaths Across America Day is finally here, and
wow, did our county step up and make things happen
to honor our veterans! Whether you told someone
about Wreaths Across America's mission, donated
at the Wreaths Across America website, or dropped
off some money with our volunteers at the Market
on Maple or during our fundraiser downtown, you
have been a part of helping to honor the memory
of Screven County's veterans by placing wreaths at
their graves, and we thank you!
Now there's just one thing left to do, and that is to
celebrate Wreaths Across America Day, and to lay
the wreaths that you have enabled us to buy at the graves of every known veteran in our
county. Because of our county's history of stepping up when America needs us, and the
tremendous support we have received in our drive to honor their sacrifices, we have had to
spread Wreaths Across America Day across three days, and many cemeteries. Here is the

Fire Safety Tips for
Christmas Celebrations
With the holiday season in full swing and Christmas
trees in homes across the county, Fire Chief Shane
Burke says, “it’s crucial to remember that amidst the
festivities, fire safety should never be overlooked.
Christmas trees, lights, and decorations can pose
fire hazards, and it's essential to take precautions to
ensure a safe and joyous celebration.”
Choosing the Right Tree:
• Artificial Trees: Opt for fire-retardant
artificial trees. While not fireproof, these trees
are designed to resist ignition and slow down the
spread of flames.
• Real Trees: Be cautious with real trees,
which are made of wood and can easily catch fire.
Keep any open flames, such as candles, away from
the tree. Use a fire guard to prevent embers from
escaping.
Selecting a Fresh Tree:
• Avoid Older Trees: Older trees are more
flammable due to dried-out wood. Choose a tree
with a vibrant green color, a strong Christmas
tree smell, and minimal needle drop when gently
dropped on the ground.
Maintaining Hydration:
• Keep It Watered: Regularly water your
tree to maintain its freshness and reduce fire risk.
A well-hydrated tree is less likely to dry out,
preventing rapid fire spread. A tree can absorb up
to two pints of water daily.
Being Mindful with Lights:
• Turn Off Unattended Lights: Christmas lights, while festive, carry a fire risk. Always turn off
lights when not in use or unattended. Consider using a timer for added peace of mind.
• Check Light Age: Older lights are more likely to be faulty and unsafe. Look for signs of wear
and replace or repair damaged lights promptly.
• Use Appropriate Lights: Ensure indoor lights are used indoors and outdoor lights are used
outdoors. Never overload sockets, use one extension lead per socket, and check them regularly.
Consider Decorations:
• Material Matters: Be mindful of decorations' materials. Flammable substances like card and
wood should be kept away from heat sources or open flames.
• Safe Placement: Avoid attaching decorations to lights or near heat sources to prevent potential
fire hazards.
Invest in Fire Safety Equipment:
• Preparation Is Key: Ensure fire safety equipment is up to date. Test fire alarms regularly, keep
spare batteries on hand, and consider professional assistance for installation and maintenance.
As families come together to celebrate the season, implementing these fire safety measures can help
prevent accidents and ensure that the holidays remain a time of joy and warmth. Remember, preparation
and mindfulness can go a long way in creating a safe and merry Christmas for everyone.
City of Sylvania City Council Addresses Budget, Zoning, and Parking Concerns
By Sarah Saxon, Reporter The City of Sylvania
for City Council convened
The Times on Tuesday, December 5,
at the City Hall Council
Chamber to discuss crucial matters affecting the community.
The minutes of the previous meetings were reviewed, and
the council witnessed unanimous approval from members
Cynthina Scott and John Bolton. With a consensus. Council
went on to approve and pass the Resolution, adopting the
2024 city budget, totaling $37,481,620.
The session then transitioned to new business, where
a significant discussion unfolded regarding the potential
merger of various boards under the Zoning Board of
Adjustments into a single, cohesive entity. This move aims
to streamline processes and enhance efficiency in managing
zoning matters within the city.
With the prospect of the event center opening, council
members raised concerns about parking availability. A
specific concern was voiced regarding where people would
park when the event center welcomed guests. To address
this, one council member suggested exploring the possibility
of additional parking at the Market on Maple.
Despite the importance of addressing parking concerns,
a clear timeline for the opening of the event center was not
provided during the meeting.
With no further discussion on the matter, the council
efficiently concluded its meeting by adjourning.
