“The Light in the Darkness”
Isaiah 9:2 - “Thepeople who walked in
darkness have seen a great light; those who
dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them
has light shone. ”
Even though I read most of my books
on my Kindle now, I still enjoy going
into bookstores. When I walk into a
bookstore, there is always a table in front
of the entrance with the bestselling books,
and there is a large section on that table
devoted to “self-help” books. If you don’t
know what I’m talking about, you can skip
the bookstore and google “NY times self-
help bestsellers”. What amazes me about
these books is that they don’t stay on the
bestseller list long - they are replaced with
sequels or the newest edition of “self-help”.
If we could help ourselves, why isn’t there
just one great self-help book that has been
written? Why do we need more and more
self-help books every year?
The last time I took my wife out for a
romantic dinner, we went to a restaurant
with white tablecloths, linen napkins, and
candles on the table. As we were looking
at the menu, I noticed something about the
candle on our table - it was artificial. This
candle was an electric candle that flickered,
mimicking a real flame. It was so well
done, and it looked so much like the real
thing, that it tricked me into thinking it was
real. Do you know when I figured out it was
a fake? When I realized it was not giving
off any heat.
Those self-help books, and all of man’s
answers, are like artificial light - it mimics
the real thing, but there is no life in it. A
real candle is alive - it flickers, it smokes,
it dances, it changes, and it gives off heat!
There is a difference between artificial
light, and the real thing! Real light is alive.
Isaiah 9:2 says that “a great light has
come to a people living in deep darkness.”
This is a prophecy about the future birth of
Jesus. Matthew 1:21 says that Jesus came to
be the savior of the world, saving His people
from their sins. Jesus said in John 8:12, “I
am the Light of the world. Whoever follows
Me will not walk in darkness, but will have
the Light of life.” Do you have the Light of
life or are you walking in darkness?
Jesus is the great Light that has come to
a people living in deep darkness - darkness
caused by our sin. In the Bible darkness is
always descriptive of man’s sin, being far
away from God. The problem is, all of the
artificial light in our culture has tricked
us into thinking we aren't living in deep
darkness.
One more illustration - New York City,
the city that never sleeps. At 3 am, when the
night is darkest, NYC is lit up like noontime
because of all of the artificial light. In NYC
you never have to be in the dark because of
all of the manmade light.
We live in a world that never sleeps,
saturated by the artificial lights of this
world. What happens when the lights go
out? What happens when the artificial light
fails, and the darkness is so dark that it
feels like a heavy blanket? What happens
when the self help books fall short of fixing
the problem? Jesus is the solution to the
problem - He is the Light of the world that
illuminates the deepest darkness. He came
to be your light, to remove your sin, and
to lead you out of deep darkness into His
marvelous light of life.
