Sylvania - Demmon
George Rogers, Jr., age
97, of Sylvania, passed
away very peacefully in
his sleep on Thursday
evening, December 7, 2023,
at Pineview Nursing Home
and Rehabilitation Center
with family at his side.
Mr. Rogers was born in
New York in 1926. For 35
years he worked as a painter
for the Carrier Corporation.
Mr. Rogers fell madly in
love with his late wife,
Joyce. They started a life
together in New York in
the early ’50s. Roughly 30
years later, he and his wife
fell in love with the south
and moved to Georgia in
1984. They enjoyed the
life that they had made in
Sylvania, Georgia where
Mr. Rogers was known
for growing plants and a
vegetable garden every
year. He and his wife would
always travel, go on cruises,
and meet new people. He
volunteered at Sylview
Nursing Home on Sundays
for church services. Mr.
Rogers was known to
always read his Bible every
night before he would go
to bed. He served as a role
model for many people and
a good and faithful servant
for God. After his wife of
many years passed, it was
hard for him to keep going
without her. He then busied
himself with his gardening
and spending time with his
children, grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Rogers adored his
family, and his face would
always brighten up when
they would come to visit.
Every visit that was made,
he would always make
sure everyone knew how
much he loved them, to
be careful, and would
end the visit walking you
out to the door. He lived
with his daughter, Ann,
for a few months until his
illness made him reside in
a nursing home. His pride
and joy was Precious, Ann’s
dog. He attended church
with his daughter, Ann, on
Sundays at His Grace and
always looked forward to
attending the services. His
Grace gave him a lot of
peace and so much love for
the surrounding people and
the community. His family
thanks you for coming and
praying for them during
this time. Those who
will cherish his memory
include his daughters,
Diane Voyte and Elizabeth
Smalley; sons and
daughters-in-law, Douglas
& Carol Rogers, Richard &
Michelle Rogers; brother,
Walter Kane Rogers; 9
grandchildren, 4 great
grandchildren, 2 great-
great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive
friends on Wednesday,
December 13, 2023, from
6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at
Thompson-Strickland-
Waters Funeral Home.
A graveside service
will be held on Thursday,
December 14, 2023, at

Betty’s favorite quote is
from the poem ‘Stopping
by Woods on a Snowy
Evening’ by Robert Frost,
The woods are lovely,
dark and deep. But I have
promises to keep, and miles
to go before I sleep, and
miles to go before I sleep.
We are so grateful for all
the miles she dedicated to
her family, and now she has
eternal life. Betty will be
deeply missed, her memory
forever etched in the hearts
of all privileged to have

Every Christmas I love to see what different Advent
calendars are out and available for the younger generation.
A good bit of them have scripture with candy and some
even have a quick saying and a toy of some sort. However, I
like the ones that pertain themes to Christmas. Like the ones
I grew up with. The Advent calendar I had, went through
the stories of Christmas including the nativity. However,
something it also included was the twelve days of Christmas.
Which actually begins on Christmas Day. You know the
song. On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me,
a partridge in a pear tree...and so on. I remember thinking,
I thought Christmas was over on December twenty fifth.
However, I learned that actually the season of Christmas
begins on the twenty fifth and continues for 12 days.
It is funny how we grow up and leam by what we are
taught in our local Church. I was always taught that
Christmas starts when you put up your tree and ends on
December twenty sixth.
Now, that I am Episcopal, I finally read it for myself, and
in fact it does start Christmas day.
That is what the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is
all about. Gifts given each day of Christmas.
This very familar hymn is an English Christmas carol. A
classic example of a cumulative song. And as I stated above,
the lyrics detail a series of increasingly numerous gifts
iven to the person
y their "true love"
on each of the twelve
days of Christmas.
The carol, whose
words were first
published in England
in the late eighteenth
century, has a large
number of different
melodies , which
have been associated
with the song, of
which the best known
is derived from a
1909 arrangement
of a traditional folk
melody by English
composer Frederic
Austin. These 12 Days FREDERIC AUSTIN
have been celebrated
in Europe since before
the middle ages and were a time of celebration.
Frederic William Austin was born March 30, 1872 and
died April 10, 1952. He was an English baritone singer, a
musical teacher and composer in the period, from 1905-
1930. He is best remembered for nis restoration and
production of The Beggar's Opera by John Gay and Johann
Christoph Pepusch, its sequel, Polly, in 1920 to 1923, and
for his popularization of the melody of the carol. The
Twelve Days of Christmas. Austin was the older brother of
the composer Ernest Austin that was a few years younger,
bom in 1874.
Frederic's father was a shirt tailor. Austin was sent at the
age of 12 to live at Birkenhead, where he received organ
and music lessons from his uncle. Dr. W. H. Hunt, and nad
singing training from Charles Lunn at this young age.
Now, this particular Christmas carol came from these
twelve days. Read what each day is really all about.
- Day 1 Christmas Day (December 25) We celebrate the
Birth of Jesus/
- Day 2 The day after Christma, also known as Boxing
Day or Saint Stephen’s Day. Stephen was the first Christian
martyr who died for his faith. It's also the day when the
Christmas Carol 'Good King Wenceslas' takes place.
- Day 3, (December 27th) We celebrate Saint John the
Apostle Day, which was one of Jesus's disciples and friends.
- Day 4, (December 28th) The Feast of the Holy Innocents.
When people remember the baby boys which King Herod
killed when he was trying to find and kill the Baby Jesus.
- Day 5 (December 29th) St Thomas Becket. He was
Archbishop of Canterbury in the 12th century and was
murdered on December 29, 1170 for challenging the King’s
authority over the Church.
- Day 6 (December 30th) We celebrate Saint Egwin of
Worcester.
- Day 7 (December 31st) New Year's Eve (known
as Hogmanay in Scotland). Pope Sylvester the first is
traditionally celebrated on this day. He was one of the
earliest popes. In many central and eastern European
countries (including Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Croatia, Czechia, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy,
Luxembourg Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland and Slovenia)
New Year's live is still sometimes called 'Silvester'. In the
UK, New Year's Eve was a traditional day for games and
sporting competitions. Archery was a very popular sport
and during the middle ages it was the law that it had to be
practised by all men between ages 17 to 60 on Sunday after
Church. This was so the King nad lots of very good archers
ready in case he need to go to war.
Day 8 (January 1 st) - We celebrate, Mary, the Mother of
Jesus.
Day 9 (January 2nd)Saint Basil the Great and Saint
Gregory Nazianzen, two important fourth century
Christians.
Day 10 (January 3rd) Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus.
This remembers when Jesus was officially named'in the
Jewish Temple. It's celebrated by different churches on a
wide number of different dates.
Day 11 (January 4th) Celebration of Saint. Elizabeth
Ann Seton, the first American saint, who lived in the 18th
and 19th centuries. In the past it also celebrated the feast of
Saint Simon Stylites, who lived on a small platfomi on the
top of a pillar for 37 years.
Day 12 (January 5th) This day is also known as Epiphany
Eve. And we also celebrate. Saint.John Neumann who
was the first Bishop in America. He lived in the early 19th
century.
