This prestigious recognition highlights academic excellence and the profound impact of dedicated educators. Aiden Sowell, a senior at SCHS, has consistently demonstrated outstanding academic prowess. The son of Brian, a physical therapist with Optim Medical in Statesboro, and Shannon, an invaluable member of the Board of Education, Aiden's commitment to education has earned him the coveted title of Star Student. With an impressive, combined SAT score of 1300, Aiden Sowell aspires to attend Mercer University in the fall, pursuing his dream of becoming a dermatologist and establishing his own practice in the Statesboro area. When questioned about his journey to becoming the Star Student, Sowell attributed his success to rigorous study habits, investing up to 5 hours a day, the support of his family, and the guidance of exceptional teachers like Amy Sheley and, notably, Ashley Lariscy Taking dual enrollment classes at East Georgia State College during his senior year, Aiden is already making strides towards his college studies, with courses in Intro Sociology, English I, Intro Psychology, and English II, earning him 4 valuable credits. Beyond academics, Aiden Sowell is a familiar face in the spotlight, having showcased his acting talents in numerous productions at the Averitt Center in Statesboro. His multifaceted achievements reflect a dedication to both the arts and academia, and he even works part time at Ross Drugs. The young athletes showcased their prowess on the wrestling mat, demonstrating skill and determination that propelled them to an impressive 7th place finish in the competition. Individual excellence was a key factor in the Screven Elite Wrestling Club's success, with standout performances from each member contributing to the overall team achievement. SEE WRESTLING ON PAGE 7 Pastor Vernon Edenfield, revered minister at Little Ogeechee Baptist Church, was recently celebrated in recognition of his 38 years of unwavering service. The commemorative event, held at the historic church, marked Pastor Edenfield's significant contributions and longstanding commitment to the community. The esteemed pastor, formerly a county worker, transitioned from a bi- vocational role five years ago when he embraced full-time ministry. His dedication to the pastoral role has made him a beloved and respected figure within the Middle Baptist Association (MBA). Pastor Vernon Edenfield holds the distinction of being the longest- serving minister in the MBA, a testament to his enduring commitment to spreading faith and fostering community bonds. With nearly four decades of service, he has played a pivotal role in the spiritual growth of the congregation and the broader community. The celebratory event at Little Ogeechee Baptist Church was a heartwanning affair, featuring various elements to honor Pastor Edenfield. Attendees were treated to soulful music, adding a melodious touch to the atmosphere. The highlight of the celebration was an award presentation, recognizing the pastor's tireless efforts and positive impact over the years. The event drew participants from the local community eager to embrace the chilling waters for a good cause. Among the enthusiastic participants were Logan and Levi Hughes, accompanied by their mother, Nikki Nelson, a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 116. The Hughes family, known for their active involvement in community events, brought their unique energy to the frosty affair. Logan and Levi, both proud members of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 116, demonstrated their commitment to supporting the American Legion's initiatives. The duo fearlessly plunged into the frigid waters, showcasing their resilience and contributing to the festive atmosphere. The annual Polar Plunge has become a cherished tradition within the GA American Legion Family, serving as a platform for fostering community bonds while raising funds for various charitable endeavors. Participants, like the Hughes family, not only endure the wintry waters but also contribute to the Legion's ongoing efforts to support veterans, military families, and the local community. Nikki Nelson, sharing her thoughts on the event, expressed pride in her sons' active participation and highlighted the importance of community involvement. "Events like the Polar Plunge bring us together for a good cause. It's heartening to see our community united in support of our veterans and their families," she remarked. The Polar Plunge is just one example of the American Legion Family's commitment to service and camaraderie. As the winter event concluded, participants, including Logan and Levi Hughes, warmed up with hot beverages and shared laughter, reflecting on the memorable experience and the collective effort to make a positive impact.
