Coward, Jr.’s 92nd birthday in style! By Sam Eades, Publisher for The Times Charleston, S.C. in 1932. His parents were Aric R. Coward, Sr. and Mattiebell Hodges Coward. His family lived in Sylvania for the majority of his life. He married in 1956 to Ruby Newman from Kilgore, Texas, they had two sons and one daughter. Mr. Coward worked in Savannah as a Adjuster for International Paper from 1951 until his retirement in 1995. After retirement, he made the decision to continue as a trainer for International Paper and traveled all over the United States and the world. He has been to many places in his lifetime, and with a big smile on his face, he shared with me all the places he has been. Elizabeth N.J., Plainfield, II., Arizona, Edinburg Scotland, Belgium and then back to Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Coward were able to travel to many other places around the world together also. Now, Aric is still very active. He trains and runs hunting dogs. His life long friends call him, "the best hunting dog trainer in the south." When asked what he contributes his long life to, he said, "It's all about working hard, living a good life, and staying active." Happy 92th Birthday Mr. Coward! The Times Newspapers wish you many more! A grand celebration was held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 for the ninety second birthday of Mr. Aric Rudolph Coward, Jr. of Sylvania. And, I have to say, a big celebration it was! Mr. Coward, adorned in his sequin blue hat and sequin bow tie, greeted over 150 plus guest to his big soiree'. The grand event took place at Nutty's Kuntry Kitchen in Sylvania. Even a famous Elvis Presley impersonator, R.J. Poole, made an appearance and gave the crowd a show like no other. Singing all the favorite Elvis tunes, Blue Swede Shoes, Hound Dog, and many more. Every attendee was given at least a Elvis scrarf or "Elvis" Teddy Bear, while the singer hugged every lady in the house and made their day. The bufffet hosted an Stacy Jarrell & Elvis array of wonderful country cooking with fried chicken taking first place as usual. Not to mention, desserts. Wow! There were over eight plus cakes that ranged from lemon to strawberry and of course, my favorite, double chocolate. All the cakes were made by Cathy Deal and boy were they delicious! Call her! BLOOD PRESSURE Neighbors, that Queen song certainly captures quite a bit of passion about pressure and how pressure can wreck things. Now there is not much passion when it comes to blood pressure, and in fact understanding blood pressure can be just as complicated as figuring out lyrics from 80s rock songs. What are we measuring when we get those blood pressure readings? When we take a blood pressure reading, we gather a measurement of how much pressure is pushing against our arteries and the pressure our organs are receiving. First, “What’s blood?” Blood itself is an organ system whose function is transportation. It carries oxygen, nutrients, and hormones in the blood to all body cells. Body organs receive fuel and instructions from hormones and have waste removed. Our blood connects all of our organs into a whole integrated person. The second is pressure. Pressure is a measure of force. It takes pressure to move the blood throughout the body. The heart generates the pressure to move blood, but the squeeze of arteries also creates pressure. Our heart must overcome the pressure in the arteries to keep blood flowing. The top number on a blood pressure reading, systolic blood pressure, is the pressure when the heart is pumping. The bottom number, diastolic pressure, is when the heart relaxes. The problem occurs when the resting blood pressure is too high. High blood pressure places extra work on the heart over an extended period of time and can lead to heart disease. High blood pressure can also damage our organs over time and is a leading cause of kidney disease, strokes, and vascular disease, among many other conditions. Normal blood pressure is less than 120 over less than 80 when measured correctly. An accurate blood pressure reading is taken at rest, seated, arm supported at chest level, and should be repeated in 15-20 min if elevated. High blood pressure is common. Almost half of all adults in the United States have high blood pressure. Thankfully hypertension is one of the most treatable conditions. Lifestyle changes (less salt, weight loss, diets high in fruits and veggies, and exercise) may be enough to control mild elevations in blood pressure. Typically though, medications are required for this prevalent condition. It is a good idea to periodically check your blood pressure and review your blood pressure readings with your doctor.
