With each finishing their first week at 1-1, the Red and White will host AAA powerhouse Savannah Country Day this afternoon before traveling to Tattnall County this Friday. On February 20 Southeast Bulloch will come to the SCF1S courts. In the season opener at Savannah’s Bacon Park both SCHS teams took comfortable 5-0 wins in their first-ever meeting with 3AAAA Islands. For the Lady Gamecocks it was Lyla Johnson (6-0, 6-1), Caroline Boswell (6-1, 6-1), Emma Rose Griner (6-1, 3-6, 6-4), Garyn Howard/ Kerrigan Bogart (6-2, 6-3), and Jayla Lovett/ Ryland Reynolds (6-4, 6-1). For the Gamecocks it was John Boswell (6-4, 6-1), JD Hall (6-0, 6-3), Josh Patel (6-2, 6-3), Noah Boykin/ Whit Morgan (6-1, 6-2), and Tucker Thomas/ Michael Weaver (6-1, 6-1). The home opener on Thursday was a picture of frustration for Reynolds and his troops, especially the boys, who let a chance to defeat the AAAAAA Mustangs slip through their grasp in a 4-1 defeat. For the Lady Gamecocks, the chance was not there. In the boys match all five individual matches went to a fifth set, two played via the tie breaker (doubles) and three played with a traditional set (all singles). Only the number two doubles team of Thomas/Weaver (2-6, 6-3, 12-10) were able to net a win. Losing were Boswell 2-6, 6-4, 2-6, Hall 6-3, 6-7 (6), 0-6, and Patel 6-1, 3-6, 1-6 in singles. All seemed to give out of steam at the end. The top doubles team of Boykin/ Morgan fell 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-10. Against South Effingham the Lady Gamecocks lost the singles and won the doubles. In singles it was Johnson (4- 6, 2-6), Boswell (1-6, 1-6), and Griner 1-6, 0-6) while the doubles teams of Howard/Bogard (6-0, 6-2) and Lovett/ Reynolds (6-1, 6-0). Both teams played again yesterday at the home gym in the first round of the Region 3-A D1 tournament. A girls win over bottom-seeded Claxton yesterday and they will play Metter in Metter tomorrow at 4:00 while a boys win over Metter yesterday and they will play top seeded Woodville-Tompkins in Metter at 8:30 tomorrow. A win yesterday also assured either or both of a trip to the state tournament next week. The region tournament finals and consolation finals will be in Metter on Friday. The first round of the Class A D1 state tournament is either February 20 or 21. While the girls game with Jeffco was a blowout from start to finish, the boys of Nick Clifton played a game that was tight throughout the entire game, especially the finish. The first half was full of momentum shifts as the Warriors jumped to a 22-11 second quarter lead with the Gamecocks coming back to take a 23-22 lead at the 5:01 mark. Still the visitors led 33-28 at intermission. The third quarter’s end set the stage for a tense final stanza when Kashard Prescott hit a buzzer-beating three from near half court to make the 24 minute scoreboard show Jeffco-50 and SCHS-49. Throughout the final stanza the teams traded leads until the last tie at 58-58 with 2:37 remaining. A Prescott basket with 2:02 remaining put the Red and White up for good at 60-58 but there were still tense seconds down the stretch. Jase Hughes hit for two with :49 left before Brennen Fountain iced the game with a pair from the charity stripe with just :06.7 remaining and the final was 64-59. Three Roosters hit for double figures with Fountain at 16, DeMarko Ward at 14, and Brandon Smith at 10. Beckwith was close to a double-double as he pulled down an incredible 18 rebounds but had nine points. The Gamecocks finished their regular season at 5-17 but played a Metter team yesterday to whom they lost by 51-48 and 59-54 margins in two very winnable games. The Lady Gamecocks of Stephanie Davis made short work of the winless Lady Warriors as they took a 22-8 lead after one quarter and went on to a 64-32 victory. Jaliah Roberts finished with 21, Alailah Scott with 18, and Olivia Jackson with 10. Scott, Kyla Oglesby, and Kadence Morris had five boards each, Roberts seven steals, and Rayven Tyler five assists. The Lady Gamecocks finished their regular season at 18-6. In facing Claxton yesterday the team faced a Lady Tiger squad who they have already defeated by 77-28 and 69-29 margins. HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS ARE DUE SOON The Screven County Athletic Hall of Fame is now accepting new nominations. Anominee must be a graduate of a public high school in Screven County. In order to be considered a nominee must have graduated no later than 2014. Nominees’ names and a thorough biography, along with accomplishments (especially beyond high school) are required. The preferred method of application submission is a word document sent to Burton Kemp at bukemp75@gmail.com. A nominee will be considered in the following areas: high school athletic participation, athletic awards, records and recognition or college athletic participation, athletic awards, records and recognition. Professional accomplishments are also considered. A special category of membership also exists whereby an individual who has been of special or essential assistance in furthering the athletic program in Screven County might also be inducted. An Executive Committee, made up of local members of the Hall, accepts the nominations and then selects ten finalists each year. The 10 candidates are then voted on by each member of the Hall. All inductees must receive a certain percentage of the votes to be inducted, with no more than five new members inducted each year. Noninducted nominees’ names carry over for at least three years and need not be reentered. LADY GAMECOCKS SHOW WELL ON ALL REGION TEAM Led by the Region 3-A D1 Offensive Player of the Year Alailah Scott, the SCHS Lady Gamecocks of Stephanie Davis additionally took two other First Team All Region spots, a Second Team spot, and an Honorable Mention spot. The Lady Gamecocks finished their regular season Friday night with an 18-6 record. Nick Clifton’s Gamecocks, who finished their regular season at 5-17, also had players gamering postseason accolades. Scott, who was also First Team All Region 3 A in 2022, has nearly 900 points on her career and currently sits at second all time with better than 139 treys. The record, held by Yana Felton, is 150. She currently averages 16.5 ppg to go with 5.1 rpg. Freshman Jaliah Roberts and junior Olivia Jackson were also named First Team. Roberts is averaging 14.7 ppg and a team leading 8.0 rpg while Jackson averages 9.1 ppg and 5.4 rpg. Coming on strong this season and being named Second Team is sophomore Kyla Oglesby. Named Honorable Mention was junior Rayven Tyler. For the boys, who have no one averaging in double figures, sophomores Kashard Prescott (8.2 ppg) and Rodney Beckwith, and senior Deven Oliver were named Second Team while sophomore Jase Hughes and freshman DeMarko Wared (8.3 ppg) were Honorable Mention.
