Tell It To Jesus How many of you remember the old camp meetings? Remember, the old camp meeting choir and the old hymns we would sing? I remember several in my childhood and they would last sometimes for weeks and even sometimes months. Some of the wonderful stories and testimonies I would hear, I will never forget. I do remember one instance when I was around the age of 6 or 7, my family was visiting my grandparents in Thomson, Georgia and as we drove through town we saw a large green tent with a large sign that said "camp meeting - large revival, every night". Well, I had been to a few with my parents and I was intriqued. So, after we returned to my grandparents house, later in the evening me and my cousin decided to walk up to town, (about 3 miles I would say) and go to this camp meeting. We really didn't tell anyone we were going. My cousin was always doing bad things He "begged" me to go. (That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!) Anyway, I digress. After we arrived at the large green tent, we decided not to go in just yet, we would peek under the sides of the tent and see what was going on. It was really just as I had thought. Lots of singing, a big choir and a large crowd. The only thing I did not recognize, was the dancing and shouting. (My family was Baptist and we didn't do that sorda thing, ya know) Anyway, we continued to watch as they sang good ole gospel hymns one right after the other until finally the preacher got up and started quoting scripture. You know how it is in those type services, "For God so love the world... and repent....before the hotness of hell finds you"...and so on...I am sure you know the drill. Then all of a sudden, as we watched with wide eyes, our eyes got even wider as these men brought out snakes, large ones. Lord, ya'll I didn't know what to do. Of course, we were young boys and we were glued. Or at least our hands were. We couldn't move, even if we wanted to. We were STUCK! Lord! Help Me, I prayed!! The preacher, took a couple and raised them to the sky and started speaking in a tounge and well, folks started coming forward and touching the snakes and falling to the floor and all. And the choir started singing,, "Tell it to Jesus". I really didn't understand what in the world, one of the hymns I loved to sing at Church had to do with snakes, however I was sure I wasn't going in to find out. I had no desire. But, finally, it was at that point, we were able to let go of whatever we were holding on to and run, I mean run...like we were being chased. Let me say, we never looked back! I have to say, that was my first and final experience with big green tents and snakes. For good! I tell this story, because I love the hymn, "Tell it to Jesus". This experience did not waver my love for this song. Now, I do remember this every time I sing it. However, I love the words of each and every verse. It has a deep and true hearted meaning for me. My Mother's Mom would sing this on occasion to us as Children as she tucked us in for bed. Right after we said our prayers. And sometimes until this day, I still sing it before I pray, if I have had a stressful day. It was written by Jeremiah Eames Rankin in 1855 for his sister who was very inquisitive . Similar to me as a child. I was, as noted above, very inquisitive. Rankin was the President of Howard University from 1889 until 1903. He was a minister and a talented hym lyricist and writer his entire life also. He died in November of 1904 at the age of 76. My hope is that if you are having a stressful day or have a special need, you will... Tell it to Jesus today. 1 Are you weary, are you heavyhearted? Tell it to Jesus, Tell it to Jesus; Are you grieving overjoys departed? Tell it to Jesus alone. Chorus: Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus, He is a friend that's well known; You've no other such a friend or brother. Tell it to Jesus alone. 2 Do the tears flow down your cheeks unbidden? Tell it to Jesus, Tell it to Jesus; Have you sins that to men's eyes are hidden? Tell it to Jesus alone. [Chorus] 3 Do you fear the gath'ring clouds of sorrow? Tell it to Jesus, Tell it to Jesus; Are you anxious what shall be tomorrow? Tell it to Jesus alone. [Chorus] 4 Are you troubled at the thought of dying? Tell it to Jesus, Tell it to Jesus; For Christ's coming kingdom are you sighing? Tell it to Jesus alone.
