thesylvaniatimes.com The Sylvania Times Wednesday, February 21, 2024 - Page 11 -Church News- Words of Encouragement By Joshua Johnson, Special Contributor Pastor Oak Hill Baptist Church, tVtlLLEN “Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life” In John 11:25-26 Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, even though he dies, he will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 100% of everyone who is alive today will die. 100% of the people in this room will die. We don’t know when, we don’t know where, and we don’t know how but we do know that we will because the Bible tells us so in Hebrews 9:27 - “it is appointed for man to die once, and then comes judgment.” There is one day in everyone’s future that is the day of death. In John 11, when Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life”, He is at the grave of his good friend Lazarus, who had just died. Lazarus’s sisters are grieving. Jesus is grieving. John 11:35 says “Jesus wept”. During their grief, Jesus reminds them of who He is - the Resurrection and the Life. He reminds them that He is the source of eternal life! What does it mean that Jesus is the resurrection and the life? What does Jesus mean when He says, “Whoever believes in me, even though he dies, he will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die”? You are not just a body; you are an eternal soul. Your soul is contained in your physical body. Jesus said the body can be killed, but no one can kill the soul. Because of the curse of sin, your physical body will die but your soul will live forever in one of two places - heaven or hell. Heaven is the place of eternal life and Hell is the place of the second death, eternal separation from God. Jesus is the resurrection that leads to eternal life. We receive eternal life the moment we trust in Jesus, and we walk in it for the rest of our physical life. If you are in Christ, on the day of your death, when your soul leaves your body, you will go into the presence of God in Heaven. Then, on the day that Jesus returns, He will resurrect your physical body from the grave, transform it into an eternal body, and reunite it with your soul. Everyone who trusts in Jesus will live with him, physically, forever. This is what Jesus means when He says, “everyone who believes in me will never die.” Then He said, “Do you believe this?” Do you believe this? The only way to receive eternal life and never die is if you believe Jesus’s words. Elam Baptist Church is accepting applications for Associate Pastor of Youth, 5199 Elam Road, Millen.
