Mother Charged with
Second-Degree Murder
in Death of Toddler
Screven County Coroner’s
Office joins investigation
By Joe Brady. Editor
In a heartbreaking incident, the Burke County
Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call on
Tuesday, February 19, 2024, at around 12:45 p.m.
The call reported an unresponsive child in the 600
Block of Winter Road.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered life-saving
efforts already underway for a female toddler
found in 4 feet of water. Despite their immediate
response, the child died an hour later at the Burke
Medical Center. Alisha Stevens, 34, of Sylvania
and the mother of the toddler, was subsequently
arrested and charged with one count of second-
degree murder. Stevens has been transported to the
Burke County Jail to await legal proceedings. ... ,
The ongoing investigation suggests that the AllShll
tragic incident may be attributed to negligence. Authorities revealed
that neglect is the leading type of abuse reported in Georgia. Initial
findings indicate that the child
had been left unattended for
an extended period, eventually
falling into a hole dug in the
backyard while under her
mother’s care.
The Burke County
Sheriff’s Office is working
diligently to gather more
information surrounding the
circumstances leading to the
child’s unresponsive state. As
the investigation unfolds, the
community is left grappling
with the devastating reality of
a young life lost. The Burke
County Coroner’s Office, in
conjunction with the Screven
County Coroner’s Office
are working on the case. “In

Georgia Lawmakers Propose
Regulating Vape Sales
-Joe Brady. Editor
To regulate the
sale of nicotine
vape products in
Georgia, lawmakers
are considering
the Nicotine Vapor
Products Directory
Act. The proposed
legislation would
mandate the Georgia
Agricultural
Commissioner
to compile a
comprehensive list of approved
nicotine vape products that can be
sold in stores. Violations could result
in penalties for retailers caught
selling unapproved products.
Currently, Georgia lacks a
regulatory body overseeing the
contents of vape products sold in
stores, leaving consumers potentially
exposed to harmful substances.
The bill's sponsor, Representative
Houston Gaines, showcased a
recently purchased "Lost Mary"
vape, banned by the FDA due to
flavors targeting children. Gaines
emphasized the importance of
ensuring that vape products are
tested and approved, highlighting
the dangers associated with THC
and fentanyl-laced vapes, which
have tragically claimed young lives.
The Georgia Department of Public
Health reported 42 cases of vaping-
associated illnesses, including six
deaths. To address this concern,
the proposed bill outlines a system
of two unannounced compliance
checks each year for stores. Business
owners found selling unapproved
products could face fines or have
their licenses suspended.
According to the legislation, if a
nicotine vapor product is removed
from the approved list, businesses
will be granted a grace period to
either sell or remove the product
from their shelves. The bill also
requires manufacturers to provide
refunds to businesses affected by
changes in product status.
However, not everyone in the
vaping industry is supportive of
the proposed regulations. Dillon
