If you've traveled down
Oliver Kildare Road within
the city limits of Oliver, the
state of the roadway likely
hasn't escaped your notice. A
concerned long-time resident
recently contacted the
newspaper office, shedding
light on the deteriorating
conditions of this heavily
traveled route.
The anonymous caller
expressed frustration,
stating, "All they {Oliver}
has done is patch the holes,
but they need to be fixed.
Some of those holes are 18
inches to 2 feet deep. When
I have called to complain, I
have been told to bear with
us."
In response to these
concerns, The Sylvania
Times reached out to Mayor
Justine Brown, seeking
clarification on the town's
plans for addressing the
road's state. Mayor Brown
reassured the public,
stating, "We are currently
in the process of fixing the
roadway. We plan on using
the Local Maintenance
& Improvement Grant
(LMIG) from the
Georgia Department of
Transportation."
However, a deeper
investigation revealed
that, according to the dot.
ga.gov website, Oliver
received $4,645.00 in
2022, $4,734.00 in 2023,
and $4,540.00 in 2024
through LMIG. According
to LMIG mles, a 30%
match is required from the
community, meaning Oliver
would need to contribute
$45,000 if the total projected
cost of repaving the road is
$150,000.
Mayor Brown clarified
that they were saving
LMIG funds to initiate the
project, but the challenge
lies in the uncertainty of
how long Oliver can save
before risking the loss of
LMIG funding. Additionally,
funds disbursement must be
justified yearly.
The Sylvania Times
reported in its February
13, 2024, issue that
infrastructure concerns were
addressed at the February 5,
2024 town council meeting.
Observations from pictures
indicate that efforts have
been made to fill in the
potholes.
Efforts to address the
situation have extended
beyond the local level, with
The Times reaching out to
Speaker Jon Bums' office for
potential intervention. As of
press time, there has been no
response to this inquiry.
Mayor Brown remains
optimistic, stating, "We
expect the roadway to be
repaved by the summer." The
community eagerly awaits
improvements to Oliver
Kildare Road, and Sylvania
Times will continue to
follow this developing story.
