Words of
Encouragement

“It’s Not Karma!”
“Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever a person sows, that's what he
will reap.“ - Galatians 06:70
Have you ever heard the terms, or used the temis, “bad karma” or “good karma”?
Karma is an idea in Buddhism and Hinduism that says whatever you do will come back
to affect you later. For instance, if you do a good deed, at some point you will be owed
good, or if you treat someone badly, you will receive bad in the future. This concept of
Karma is like a cosmic boomerang of action.
The Bible addresses this concept - but it’s not Karma! Galatians 6:7 teaches us God’s
law of sowing and reaping - “Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever
a person sows, that's what he will reap.” Sowing means planting and reaping means
harvesting. Put simply, this verse says that your decisions and actions have consequences.
“Mocked” in this verse means “to sneer at”. We are sorely deceived if we think we can
make bad decisions and expect God to bless their outcome. We are in fact sneering at
God when we refuse His ways and His wisdom.
I can’t go out into a field, plant cotton seeds, and expect apple trees to grow. If I plant
cotton seeds, cotton plants will grow, and they will produce cotton. In fact not one of
us would plant cotton seeds and expect apple trees to grow! Yet, when it comes to the
actions we sometimes take in our personal lives, we choose to plant bad seeds and then
are shocked when we harvest bad fruit!
Galatians 6:8 tells us how to plant, “For the one who sows to his own flesh will reap
destruction from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from
the spirit.” What does this mean? It means that you get to choose how you plant during
your lifetime. One choice is that you can live your life for yourself, to satisfy your own
selfish desires - but in the end you will reap destruction, eternal death in hell. The other
choice is that you can trust in Jesus as your Savior by repenting of your sins and following
Him as Master, and you will reap eternal life in Him.
The greatest evidence of God’s law of sowing and reaping is Romans 10:13
calls on the name of the Lord will be saved!”
