LADY GAMECOCKS GET BACK ON TRACK,
DOWN WOODVILLE-TOMPKINS 4-0
Scoring a pair of goals in less than a minute with under
ten minutes to go in a scoreless first half, the SCHS Lady
Gamecocks of Terry Markovcic got back on the winning
track with a 4-0 Region 3-AD1 win over visiting Woodville-
Tompkins’ Lady Wolverines last Friday at Kelly Memorial
Stadium. The win came after a tough 5-4 region loss in
Claxton’s Pecan Grove on February 27. The team’s overall
record stood at 4-2.
Standings after last week, with the first round robin
having ended yesterday, had Claxton at 3-0 and hosting 2-1
Bryan County yesterday and SCF1S at 1-2 and hosting 2-1
Metter yesterday. Woodville-Tompkins finished the first
half at 0-4. After the Lady Gamecocks host SEB tomorrow
they will go to Bryan County on Monday, March 11 to
begin the second round of region games.
Played in cold and very wet and rainy conditions against
WTF1S, the Lady Gamecocks sputtered early on, even
missing a penalty kick at the 14:55 mark of the first half.
With Sadie Beth Sell scoring a pair of goals set up by
ricochets off W-T defenders, one at 9:20 and the other at
8:28, SCHS went to the dressing room with what seemed a

comfortable 2-0 lead. While their intensity somewhat waned
at the outset of half number two, a Charlie Brannen PK with
25:50 remaining ended any possible suspense. Anna Kate

make the final count 4-0. Freshman Kaleigh Neismith had
three saves for her first win in goal.
A trip to Claxton’s Pecan Grove provided a great game
for fans, especially Lady Tiger fans, as the home team sent
the Red and White to their second consecutive region loss;
the first time that has happened since 2017. The Lady
Gamecocks led 1-0 barely three minutes in and 3-2 at the
half, stretching their lead to 4-2 early in the second half.
From that point the bounces and everything else seemed
to go the way of CHS (including a crucial yellow card
on SCHS) as they scored the last three goals of the game
enroute to their 5-4 win. For SCHS fans there appeared to
be a hand ball on CHS in the box with just :20 remaining
but it was not to be. Withrow had the first three goals that
included assists from Maddison Mitchell and Lilly Doss.
Rosa Campbell, on an assist from Withrow, had the final
goal. The match marked the first for the team without All
Region goalie Julia Dews who is out for the season with an
achilles injury. For SCHS, it was the most goals ever scored
in a losing effort.

GAMECOCKS COME BACK TO DOWN
JENKINS COUNTY 15-7
All eyes are on the SCHS batter (photo by

With a big comeback win over next year’s region rival Jenkins
County that was followed by a one-sided loss to AAAAAA South
Effingham, the SCHS baseball Gamecocks of Josh Sheley split their
pair of games last week to stand at 3-5 on the young season. As
they find the beginning of region play little more than a week away,
Metter here on March 12, the Red and White have a trip to Jefferson
County tomorrow as all that is left before then. They went to SEB
two days ago and hosted Burke County yesterday.
Though the final score of the win over Jenkins County, 15-7,
makes the game sound like a possible rout that got close late, nothing
is farther from the truth. The homestanding Eagles actually led 6-5
after five innings before the Roosters put up five spots in each of the
final pair of frames. After Slate Thompson opened the game with a
double, SCHS went on to score three in the top of the first before
JCHS came back to score three in their half. The Eagle runs were
unearned as the inning started with a passed ball third strike. The
home team scored three more in the third and by the sixth, led 6-5.
Trailing 6-5 the Roosters used four hits, an error, and a pair of
walks to plate five before using a triple and five walks in the seventh
to blow open the game. On the night Jeremiah White had three hits,
three runs scored , and three rbi with Thompson having three hits,
three runs scored, and a pair of rbi. Miyon Fulcher had two hits and
two rbi while Worth Brown had two rbi. Rylan Robbins went the
first five to get the win, allowing eight hits but striking out nine.
White got the final six outs.
Wednesday night’s game with South
Effingham was the opposite of the nine
inning 5-4 Mustang win in metro Marlow
on Valentine’s Day. SEHS put up eight
in the second and the air of expectation
of the return matchup was gone. SCHS
managed but three hits. The biggest threat
by the home team came in the fourth
when Greyson Garvin and Brayton Knight
singled and Fulcher walked with one out.
A strikeout and a ground to the pitcher
followed. South Effingham scored three
more to end the game after five. Holland
Zipperer was the starter followed by White
and DeMarko Ward.
