Words of
Encouragement

“I Want it Now!”
“Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!" -
Psalm 27:14
We're not very good at waiting today because we're used to speed and accessibility. My
iPhone can launch the ESPN app in seconds, lightyears ahead of dial-up in 2000. When
I googled "how fast does my iPhone open apps," all the articles I found were about how
to make it even faster!
Hot Pockets perfectly sums up our obsession with immediate gratification. Have you
ever read the cooking instructions on a Hot Pocket? It says you can cook it in the oven
for 20 minutes or you can pop it in the microwave for one minute. Do you know anyone
who cooks Hot Pockets in the microwave? Me neither.
Sometimes when we read Bible stories, we don't appreciate the time that takes place
over the course of the story. For instance, we can read about Abraham and Sarah's
journey to have their firstborn son Isaac in just a few chapters of Genesis. Their story
has a beginning (God calls Abraham), a middle (Abraham and Sarah pray and ask God
for a child, and God promises them a son), and an end (Isaac is bom). We read it and are
encouraged about how God kept His promise. What we don't think about is how long
Abraham and Sarah had to wait. Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90 when she
gave birth to Isaac. That is a lifetime of waiting for a son.
Another example is Joseph's story. Joseph had a dream as a teenager that God would
place him in a position of authority. What happened after he had that dream? His brothers
sold him into slavery, he was purchased by an Egyptian official named Potiphar, he was
falsely accused by Potiphar's wife and thrown into prison, he interpreted the Pharaoh's
cupbearer's dream and asked him to speak well of him to Pharaoh. The Cupbearer forgot
about Joseph - for two whole years! By the time Pharaoh summons Joseph and makes
him the second highest official in Egypt, Joseph is in his 30s. Joseph was a slave and then
a prisoner for decades while God worked out His plans.
We are conditioned by our instant gratification culture and our own desires to say, "I
want it now!" God works in His own timing - for His glory and our good. We must wait
on Him. If you are waiting on God, don't lose heart. Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let
your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!
