shared exciting updates about the
upcoming festivities.
Highlighting the rich history of
the Livestock Association, Brannen
reminisced about the inception of
the association in 1936. The first cattle showcase, boasting over 500 top-tier cattle specimens
from local farms, marked the beginning of what would evolve into an illustrious tradition.
Originally dubbed the Fat Cattle Show, the event later expanded to include swine, transforming
into the renowned Fat Stock Show. In 1952, under the stewardship of the Screven County
Livestock Association, the annual Screven County Livestock Festival was bom.
Brannen also announced Lindy Sheppard as this year's Grand Marshal for the parade
scheduled on March 30, marking a significant milestone in the association's history.
Reflecting on past champions, Brannen recounted the inaugural Livestock Festival winners
- Leonard Mock, honored as the Swine Champion, and George Zeigler, Jr., acclaimed as the
Cattle Champion. The event also crowned its first livestock queen. Miss Jerry Smith, lauded for
her exceptional riding prowess at the 1953 rodeo.
Looking ahead to the present year's celebrations, themed "Livestock and More in 2024,"
Brannen outlined a series of events. The festivities kick off on March 30 with a parade,
accompanied by the beloved Chicken Q, cooked, and sold by the Screven County Livestock
Association.
The main shows commence on April 2 with the Swine Show, followed by the Lamb/Goat
show on April 3, and culminating in the Cattle show on April 4, all starting at 6 pm at the
Screven County Ag Center on Rocky Ford Road.
Adding to the excitement, the Screven County Livestock Pageant, sponsored by the Screven
County Junior Women's Club, is set to grace the stage on March 23 at the high school auditorium.
The Sylvania Rotary Club expressed their gratitude to Brannen and Smith for sharing the
Livestock Association's storied history and eagerly anticipates participating in the upcoming
festivities honoring the community's agricultural heritage.

Hello Guys! As you know, I love to fish in local lakes and
ponds if I can. However, I do enjoy fishing around the ocean on occasion and I found a great
spot to fish on St. Simons Island a few years ago. Actually, I went to the Golden Isles and I
want to tell you a little about my trip and how great the fishing was.
I found that the Golden Isles offers a variety of fishing experiences for all anglers and a
wide range of species.
I have to say, I usually get sea sick and don't usually like bigger boats. However, on this
particular trip I chartered a fishing boat and headed for deep water to just see what I could
catch. The most I was hoping for, was snapper or maybe some crab. Now, crabbing is a
totally different story for another day.
I do love snapper cooked on the grill. Butter, little seasoning, wrapped in foil. Yum!
Now, I will say, if you don't like the idea of taking in a charter boat, you can fish and get
some great catches from the Golden Isle piers. There are many piers available.
You have St. Simons Island Pier, which happens to be a very popular spot for fishing and
crabbing. They offer several cleaning stations and a nearby bait and tackle shop which offers
advice and supplies you will need. Plus, a very friendly staff.
Next you have, Jekyll Island Pier, which I have to say, is one of my favorites. This one is
great for fishing and crabbing also. It is located next to a picnic area, which offers a place
for family to relax while you fish. That is definitely a plus.
And then you have, Gascoigne Bluff Pier. This area is home to annual fishing tournaments
as well as fishing and crabbing from the pier. This to me, is a great place to take those who
are learning to fish. It is not as crowded as other places. Just stay clear during the fishing
tournaments.
You have to remember that Georgia fishing regulations are still in force at any of these
great piers. If you are over the age of 16, you must have a fishing license to fish in
Georgia. Of course, in addtion to state rales, there may be different rules in federal waters,
which is anywhere from three to 200 miles or more off
Happy Fishing guys! May spring give you a bounty
of fish!
