March Theme:
“Finding a Pot of Gold
with Leprechaun Cookies”
While your kids are chasing rainbows and
looking for a pot of gold this St. Patrick’s Day,
make things fun & festive with these adorable
Leprechaun Cookies. With some melted candy,
Nutter Butter cookies, sprinkles, and a little
imagination, you can make their day so much
more exciting and maybe they will get lucky
enough to find their own little Leprechaun!
Items needed:
1 package Nutter Butter Cookies
Orange Candy Melting Wafers
Orange Sprinkles
Orange Heart Sprinkles
Small Eyeball Sprinkles
Green Candy Melting Wafers
Green Sprinkles
Black Candy Melting Wafers
Vegetable Oil (if needed)
Toothpicks
Wax Paper
Lay out a large sheet of wax paper. Set aside the
orange sprinkles. In a microwave safe bowl, heat the
orange candy melts every 30 seconds until completely
melted. If the wafers are too thick to dip in, add a
little bit of vegetable oil to thin the candy. Dip part
of the cookie into the melted orange wafers, then dip
each side. Lay flat on the wax paper, then add the
orange sprinkles. Repeat with remaining cookies.
Next, add a small amount of melted candy wafers to
a toothpick and put on the back of the heart sprinkle.
Place the heart sprinkle upside down on the cookie
for a mustache. Repeat with remaining cookies. Do
the same process for the eyeball sprinkles. After
all of the eyeball sprinkles are done, melt the green
candy wafers in a microwave safe bowl until creamy,
then dip the top of each cookie and lay flat on the wax
paper. Once they have all been dipped, add melted
green candy to a toothpick and add the melted candy
to the back of the green sprinkles, then place the green
sprinkle in the center of the hats. Lastly, melt the
black candy wafers in a microwave safe bowl. Once
melted, add the melted black wafers to a freezer bag
or piping bag, then make a small snip with scissors.
Pipe on each side of the green sprinkle to make it
look like a hat. Repeat with remaining cookies.
Let the cookies set and give them to your little
Leprechauns this St. Patrick’s Day!

Neighbors, Summer is just around the comer, which
means lots of time in the sun. While it is hard to beat these
long summer days, all the time under the sun can add up and
take its toll on the skin. When we think about the dangers
of excessive sun, skin cancer immediately comes to mind,
with good reason, as 1 in 5 Americans will have skin cancer
by age 70. However, thin, brittle skin from years in the
sun is also a very bothersome health concern. The issue
with sunlight is the ultraviolet radiation, which damages
DNA as well as the collagen of the skin. Thankfully, our
bodies have DNA repair mechanisms to repair UV radiation
damage. This mechanism will prevent some cancers from
occurring by repairing DNA damaged from some radiation.
Still, the system is not foolproof and can be overwhelmed
with excessive DNA damage. This summer, it is well worth
considering our daily exposure to UV radiation to maintain
healthy skin. Possibly, consider some of the following.
1. Sun Protection: The most effective way to
prevent skin cancer is to minimize exposure to harmful
UV radiation. It is advisable to seek shade during peak
sun hours (10 am to 4 pm), wear protective clothing (long-
sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses), and use
broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30.
2. Regular Skin Self-Examination: Perfomiing
monthly self-examination allows individuals to familiarize
themselves with their skin and detect any changes promptly.
Look for new moles or growths, changes in existing moles,
or other abnormalities, and have any concerning symptoms
checked out.
3. Shade for work and play: Having some shade
available in working areas or recreational settings is a great
way to protect the skin.
Change those Batteries
The Sylvania Fire Department want to remind you, “now
is the time to service those smoke detectors and change
those batteries.” It is a proven fact that smoke detectors
save lives but only if they are working properly.
