and Lilly Doss. Standing - Coach Terry Markovcic, Emma Warren, Gracen Kullberg,

Two nights after a 4-1 Tuesday loss to
region foe Metter, a team against whom
the Lady Gamecocks of Terry Markovcic
owned a 15-0 all time record, the Red and
White rebounded to upset AAAA SEB 3-2
on Thursday evening. The Lady Gamecocks
were 5-18 all time against the Lady Jackets.
After the SEB contest the SCHS was 5-3
overall, but 1-3 in region play. Two days ago
SCHS went to Bryan County to begin the
second region round robin. Their next contest
is at Kelly Memorial Stadium on March 19
when Claxton is here for Senior Night.
Region standings after the first round robin,
which ended last Tuesday, represented a look
far different from recent years. Bryan County,
Claxton, and Metter were each 3-1 while
the three-time defending region champion
Lady Gamecocks were 1-3 and Woodville-
Tompkins was 0-4. SCHS went to Bryan
County on Monday while Claxton and Metter
met yesterday. As the team has not played a
region game with its regular lineup, the return
of all players may improve those standings
for the locals.
Playing SEB with an entirely healthy roster
together for the first time since February
9, the Lady Gamecocks looked like the
team that fans have become accustomed to.
Scoring off of a pair of Kaylin Long comers,
first by Anna Kate Withrow at 32:26 and next
by Sadie Beth Sell at 14:35 the home team
jumped out 2-0. SEB brought its visiting fans
to their feet with 9:07 left in the first half and
the score was 2-1 at intemiission. For better
than 30 minutes the second half remained at
2-1 until Withrow fed Long in front of the goal
to up the count to 3-1 with 8:05 remaining.
The final eight minutes were tense with SEB
scoring with 4:39 remaining and Julia Dews,
who returned to the lineup after a three game
absence, making two great saves in the final
two minutes. Dews ended with eight saves.
With a chance to get back in the region
race hosting Metter on March 5, the Lady
Gamecocks fell behind barely a minute into
the game, missed a penalty kick at the 18:16
mark of the first half to trail 1-0 at the half,
and could not dent the scoreboard until they
were down 4-0. For long-time soccer fans the
loss to the Lady Tigers was a tough one. In
15 previous meetings with Metter, the Lady
Tigers scored a mere three goals. Much like
the SCHS win over Savannah Christian earlier
in this season, the match seemingly created a
new reality. Charlie Brannen hit a PK with
5:52 remaining to avert the shut out. Long
had seven saves including a penalty kick.
Long was pressed into goalie service just
before the match as new Kaleigh Nesmith,
already subbing for an injured Dews, was
injured in pregame warmups

DIAMOND ROOSTERS DOWN JEFFERSON
COUNTY 3-1
Downing homestanding Jefferson County 3-1 last
Thursday, the SCHS diamond Gamecocks of Josh
Sheley hope to use the week-ending victory to give
them momentum heading into the nine game region
schedule that will be played over the next three
weeks. The Roosters hosted three-time defending
region champion Metter in a doubleheader yesterday
to start 3-A D1 play and will travel to Metter to
complete the three game series this Friday. Next
week the Red and White will host Claxton in a
doubleheader on March 19 before going to Claxton
for a single game on March 22. SCHS finished the
week at 4-7 overall.
two doubles. Jeremiah White, Worth Brown, and
Greyson Garvin had two hits each.
Burke County’s AAAA Bears came to SCHS on
March 5 and were none too pleasant guests. The
Bears scored four in the first and made that more
than enough in their 11-1 win. BCHS recorded
14 hits and accepted seven walks while the SCHS
defense made six errors. The Gamecocks managed
but four hits (Brown with two. White, and Garvin)
with Scott having the rbi. Scott (1-1, 7.87) was also
the starting pitcher with relief from White, Holland
Zipperer, and Robbins.
Sheley’s troops scored just enough runs in
Louisville to make a winner of senior Rylan Robbins
(3-1, 2.40) who hurled a seven-inning gem, limiting
the Warriors to a mere three hits while walking four
and striking out ten. SCHS also played errorless
defense. Offensively the Gamecock bats rebounded
from being limited to just seven hits total in the
Monday and Tuesday games last week to pound
out 13 hits against Jeffco. The problem was a 3-11
night with runners in scoring position leading to 11
stranded runners. Gatlin Scott (2) and Brayton Knight
had rbi with Scott picking up four hits including
A trip to Brooklet on March 4 was also not a
pleasant one for the Red and White. SEB scored in
five of their six at bats enroute to their 10-0 win.
The Gamecock bats were silent with but three hits
(SlateThompson, Miyon Fulcher, and White) and
two of those came in the first inning. After the first
inning SCHS managed to get only a single runner
on base. Garvin (0-2, 6.36) was the starting pitcher
with relief coming from DeMarko Ward and Knight.
SEB picked up only five hits but received ten walks.
SCMS SOCCER AND BASEBALL HAVE
IMPRESSIVE WEEK.
The SCMS soccer Lady Gamecocks won a pair
of region games last week to go to 3-1 with just
one region game to go against South Tattnall this
past Monday. Meanwhile the SCMS baseball team
split its games last week with the sixth and seventh
graders gaining impressive wins as well. For soccer
the region tournament starts on March 18 and
continues on the 20th and the 23rd. Baseball started
region play on Monday and continues today with
ECI and will host Jenkins County Monday.
Soccer was very impressive last week, defeating
Metter 6-0 and North Tattnall 3-0. Against MMS
Mica Shipes and Addie Kullberg had two goals each
with Kassie Skinner and Rain Cail having one each.
Shipes had two more against NTMS and Kullberg
one.
Ending what their nonregion schedule at 5-2-1,
the middle school diamond “A Team” Gamecocks
defeated Bulloch Academy 8-0 before losing to
William James 9-0. Against BA Rhett Robbins had
a complete game win, striking out eight, while Jay
Conley Smith had two hits and Wyatt Brown had a
homer and four rbi. Unfortunately the future SCHS
Roosters were no-hit against WJMS.
The younger Gamecocks, the “B Team” soundly
defeated BA 11-4 and William James 10-0. In
the BA contest Zayden Perkins, Luke Stockwell,
Adrian Garvin, Trevor Lane, and Max Kight all had
multiple hits. Stockwell, Billy Williams and Kight
pitched. Against WJMS Kayden Evans pitched the
three innings with DC Burke leading an offense that
also picked up eight walks.
On Friday the eighth graders had the day off with
sixth and seventh graders fall to SEB 6-3 and sixth
graders only defeated SEB 15-7. In the former Case
Oglesby pitched and Luke Hall had a pair of rbi.
In the latter Trevor Lane allowed no earned runs
in three innings while Samuel Bazemore and Billy
Williams each had two hits and Parker Sheppard had
three rbi.
