Meeting Highlights:
Community Growth
and Safety
-Sarah Saxon. Reporter
The Oliver City Council convened on Monday, March
4, with Mayor Justine Brown presiding alongside Clerk
Melba Parker and council members Melvin Mock, Gary
Curtis, and Shontae Roper. Notably absent was council
member Herman Holland.
During the session, the council diligently approved the
minutes and financial reports, ensuring transparency and
accountability in the city's governance.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to
a presentation by Zandra Overstreet from the Newington
Heritage Society. Overstreet addressed the council,
offering her expertise in grant writing to bolster the
city's financial resources. Drawing from her experience
in assisting other communities, Overstreet volunteered
her services to aid Oliver in securing grants aimed at
enhancing infrastructure, such as roads and sidewalks,
crucial for fostering community development.
In matters of public safety. Police Chief Pierre Jordan
provided a comprehensive report to the council. Chief
Jordan detailed the enforcement activities of the Oliver
Police Department, which included issuing 12 traffic
citations. Of note was an arrest made for Possession
of Marijuana and Driving with a Suspended License,
highlighting the department's commitment to maintaining
law and order within the city.
Beyond enforcement. Chief Jordan emphasized
proactive measures, reporting on 38 business checks
conducted throughout the city, along with inspections
of residential properties and the local Post Office.
Additionally, responding to citizen concerns. Chief Jordan
was tasked with inspecting streetlights following reports
of malfunctioning units requiring attention.

Husky ‘Refuses’
To Leave The
Park, So Dad Has
To Pull Out All
The Stops
All of us dogs love to go to the park. We arrive with you
and we immediately start sniffing the entire area trying to
figure out what dog had already come before us and when
that other dog was actually there. Then it’s time to mark our
territory and claim ownership over the land. And then, we
want to get a good game of fetch in before the inevitable
happens, you are wanting to leave. Really? Just like that,
you want to leave?
It’s not we don’t love our homes, we do. It’s just that
we have so much fun at the park with all of the sights and
smells that we never want it to end. Obviously, we know we
can’t stay there forever, but we don’t understand. Mom and
Dad are being totally unfair and being big meanies trying to
pack up and head back home.
Here my friend, Husky decided to lay down the law.
No, it is not time to go! I didn’t even sniff everything yet,
you know? Well, Husky at this point, absolutely refuses to
budge and causes a big scene with lots of back talk. Mom
and Dad can’t help but laugh, but they also feel slightly
embarrassed. After all, they don’t want to cause too much
of a ruckus with all of the other park-goers trying to enjoy
their day and relax.
So, Husky decides to stage a protest. Husky isn’t having
it. His tantrum is too cute and too funny! He lays down on
the grass and will not move. Lays there as if to say, "nope...
not going anywhere." His Dad tries to pull him to the car
and says, “You’re embarrassing yourself... and us.” Finally
after putting up quite the battle, Husky's time at the park
has come to an end. Dad does what he has to do and picks
the Husky up and places him in the car.
Let's give Husky a round of A-Paws for at least trying
to stay a little longer. He deserved it. And I can say, I get it.
See ya next week!
