LADY GAMECOCKS BLAST PAST BRYAN COUNTY 6-1
Playing their first region match of the season with their
full injury-free starting lineup, the SCHS Lady Gamecock
soccer team of Terry Markovcic led 1-0 at the half before
exploding for five second half goals in a 6-1 rout of
homestanding Bryan County’s Lady Redskins on March 11.
The only match of last week for the Red and White, the win
avenged a 1-0 loss for SCHS to BCHS in Kelly Memorial
Stadium on February 22. SCHS hosted Claxton yesterday
and will head to Savannah tomorrow afternoon for a rematch
with the Lady Wolverines of Woodville-Tomkins. The final
region match of the season will be on March 26 in Metter.
With a 6-3 overall record, the Lady Gamecocks still
sit in fourth place in the 3-A D1 standings with their 2-3
region record. Ahead of SCHS are still Metter at 4-1 and
Claxton and Bryan County at 4-2. Woodville-Tompkins
is 0-6. Region games yesterday had Claxton at SCHS and
Metter at Woodville-Tompkins. Tomorrow SCHS will be
at Woodville-Tompkins and Friday Metter will be at Bryan
County. SCHS now easily owns a head to head tiebreaker
with Bryan County.
On February 22 a controversial penalty awarded Bryan
County a PK which they converted. SCHS got the same
opportunity in the second half and did not convert. While the
Lady Gamecocks dominated time of possession throughout
that match, they could not convert any of their field shots.
Last Monday SCHS outshot their hosts by a 29-9 margin,
converting on five from the field and one via the penalty.
Freshman Anna Kate Withrow got the scoring going with a
dribble by the defenders at 30:41 of the first half. Beginning
at the 29:46 mark of the second half, a scoring barrage by
the Red and White began. It was Maddison Mitchell on a
header off of a corner by Kaylin Long, followed by goals
by Long (24:15), Withrow (14:38 and 11:21), and a penalty
kick by Charlie Brannen. BCH scored their lone goal with
just 3:51 remaining from a PK. Julia Dews had two saves.

BASEBALL SPLITS WITH METTER,
THIRD GAME RAINED OUT
After earning a split with three-time defending Region
3-A champion Metter’s Tigers in Sylvania on March 12,
Josh Sheley’s baseball Gamecocks had their hottest pitcher
ready to go in Metter on March 15 for the series finale. With
a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Friday the rains came
washing out game three. It will be made up at a later date
after regularly scheduled region play ends on March 29.
This week the Roosters hosted Bryan County in a double
header yesterday and will go to Pembroke on Friday. Next
week the Red and White will travel to Claxton for two on
March 26 with the Tigers coming to Sylvania on March 29.
The first week’s action in the four-team Region 3-A D1
saw Bryan County sweep Claxton 8-4, 17-0, and 6-5 along
with the SCHS-MHS split. Obviously this week while the
Gamecocks and Redskins are battling Claxton and Metter
will face off.
Following a horrible perfomiance in the first game of the
March 12 doubleheader the Gamecocks responded with a
much better effort in game two. After spotting the Tigers a
deuce in the first, by the third inning the game was knotted
at 3-3 with SCHS taking the lead at 4-3 in the fifth. Three
more in the sixth gave the Gamecocks their 7-3 win. The
all important sixth saw Miyon Fulcher reach on an error,
eventually scoring on a wild pitch, Rylan Robbins walked
and eventually scored on a sac fly by Worth Brown, and
Holland Zipperer scored on a single by Slate Thompson.
Gatlin Scott (2-1, 6.16) pitched six with DeMarko Ward
finishing. Scott allowed seven hits and two earned mns
while striking out eight. Brown and Thompson had two hits
each with Thompson picking up three rbi. Defensively the
Red and White cut their errors from nine to one.
In a very forgettable opening to the three game series,
the Gamecocks and then-winless Tigers started nip and tuck
with the game tied at 4-4 after 4-4 and MHS up by 5-4 after
five. The Red and White then imploded. In the sixth the
visitors plated five runs on a single hit. Included, in addition
to the hit, were three walks, and four infield errors. Five
hits and two more infield errors added to the Tiger total in
the seventh to make the final 14-5. White led the offense
with a pair of hits and two rbi and Brown had two rbi. A
quartet of pitchers saw Greyson Garvin (0-3, 6.56) pitch
creditably into the sixth but unable to overcome the porous
defense. Zipperer, Billy Williams, and Ward also hurled
over the final two frames. The group saw nine infield errors
behind them. The Roosters were also 3-15 with runners in
scoring position. Rylan Robbins (3-1, 2.40) was the starter
on Friday.

While the SCMS soccer Lady Gamecocks
were finishing up their regular season last
week, the SCMS baseball Gamecocks were
just beginning their region schedule. Soccer
finished with a single loss on the season for
second place while the Gamecocks swept
ECI to open. Soccer plays this afternoon at
Toombs County in the region tournament
after a first round bye while baseball hosted
Jenkins County Monday and goes to Millen
today. The soccer championship will be on
Saturday at 10:00 at either Toombs County
or Kelly Memorial Stadium.
For the Lady Gamecocks a pair of region
wins, 3-0 over South Tattnall and 4-0 over
Bryan County, gave them a 5-1 region
record. In the win over South Tattnall Mica
Shipes had two goals and Addi Kullberg
one while against Bryan Kullberg had three
goals and Rain Cail one. Caroline Kullberg
had five saves in the two games.
For baseball the week saw a 7-6 win in
Twin City and a 7-4 win at SCMS. On the
road Wyatt Brown was three for three with
two rbi while Landon Teston and Haynes
Sell had two hits each. Rhett Robbins went
the first five for the win. Brown and JC
