LADY GAMECOCKS GET BACK
ON TRACK, DOWN JOCO 3-1
After three consecutive losses, all in region
play, the SCHS soccer Lady Gamecocks of Terry
Markovcic got back on the winning track with a 3-1
win over Johnson County in Wrightsville on March
28. The win followed a 1-0 loss in Metter to the
region champion Lady Tigers two days before. With
no matches this week, the Red and White will finish
out the regular season next week as they hit the road
to face once-beaten Region 2-A D2 champion Portal
on April 9 and Savannah Christian on April 11. They
will go to East Laurens on April 15 for the first round
of the state playoffs.
An upside down final region standing list shows
Metter as region champion (6-2, 8-4), Bryan County
as runner-up (6-2, 8-5-1). The teams split during the
regular season with Metter winning 3-1 and Bryan
County 1-0. The Lady Tigers won the tiebreaker.
Claxton is third (5-3, 9-4-1), SCHS in fourth (2-6,
7-6), and Woodville-Tompkins out of the loop (1-7,
5-10). Region 3-A D1 crosses over to play Region
2-A Dlin the playoffs. Seedings for that region are
East Laurens (8-0, 16-0), Bleckley County (6-2,
9-7), Swainsboro (3-5, 4-10), and Jefferson County
(2-6, 3-9-1).
Having been shutout by Metter and scoring but
one in a loss to Woodville-Tompkins the Lady
Gamecocks went to Wrightsville on Thursday
looking to generate some offense. That offense was a
long time coming. At the 10:42 mark of the first half
SCHS finally got on the scoreboard, but on a Charlie
Brannen penalty kick. Not until 33:55 remained in
the second half did the Lady Gamecocks get on
the board from the field when Anna Kate Withrow
scored after a dribble. The Lady Trojans closed the
gap to 2-1 with 10:30 left when they were good on
a PK. Off an assist by Maddison Mitchell, Kaylin
Long ended any suspense when she scored with 2:00
remaining. Julia Dews recorded four saves. The Red
and White had four shots bounce off one of the bars
and lost a goal to a very questionable offsides call.
Homestanding Metter realistically clinched the
region title on their field turf on March 26 with their
1-0 win over SCHS. Scoreless for over 50 minutes,
MHS scored on a cross with 27:20 remaining in the
contest and made it stand up. Dews had seven saves.

SCMS SOCCER WINS
REGION CHAMPIONSHIP

the SCMS Lady Gamecock soccer team
of GeeGee Pollock downed homestanding
Toombs County 2-0 Thursday to claim the
Southeast Georgia Middle School League

diamond Gamecocks, as South mnners-up,
will host North Tattnall in the first round on
April 9. The second round is April 11 and the

For the soccer team the win
was a “physically and mentally
challenging” match. Mica Shipes
and Adai Kullbert each scored a
goal and Caroline Kullberg had
nine saves despite leaving the
game briefly for an injury.
The region track meet in
Toombs County saw the girls

multiple hits in both games with
Sell having three rbi including a
homer in Metter. Luke Stockwell
and Trevor Lane had good
innings on the mound.

Sixth and seventh grade
baseball finished their season
at 7-5 with a win over Jenkins
County and a loss to Metter.

Evans were 3-3 on the day.

RBIs. Briley Williams, Adrain Garvin, and
DC Burke also had multiple hits on the day.

Williams, and Evans all had good innings on
the mound.
Bloodied but certainly now bowed was SCMS goalie Caroline
Kullberg after a collision in the box. She missed scant minutes
to get "cleaned up" before returning to goal in the SCMS 2-0
win over Toombs County in the SGMSL title bout.
