“The Silversmith ”
Malachi 3:3 - “He will sit as a refiner and
purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of
Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and
they will bring offerings in righteousness to the
Lord.”
The silversmith works diligently to remove the
impurities from raw silver, producing priceless
metal. To do his work, he must have raw
silver, a blazing hot fire, a crucible, and most
importantly a steady hand and a watchful eye.
The smith places the raw silver in the crucible
and holds it over the fire.
As the heat of the fire melts the silver, all the
impurities, everything that must come out of
the silver to make it priceless, rise to the top
to be scraped away. The smith sits, watching
the crucible, silver bubbling, scraping every
impurity away until at last, the silver is ready
to be brought out. Then the silversmith pulls
the pure silver from the heat of the fire, and as

it cools, he shapes it into his own making. The
silversmith’s work is now a great treasure.
Malachi 3:3 tells us that God is a silversmith,
except He doesn't refine raw silver, He refines
His children. He is first a refiner; He places
Hi children in the heat of the fire. He is also a
purifier; He holds them there! He holds men
in the fire until all of the impurities are gone.
Then He takes the refined and purified man and
shapes them into something new and beautiful.
They are His treasures, the work of the Lord.
Are you in the fire? Are you feeling the
intensity of the heat and the scorch of the
flames? Take heart, God is a refiner of silver.
God is a silversmith with a steady hand, but
even more important, with a watchful eye.
He will not keep His children in the fire one
second longer than is needed. Remember Job in
dust and ashes! Remember Joseph in prison in
Egypt! Remember Daniel in the den of lions!
Remember Jesus in
the Garden and on the
Cross!
God does not place
His children in the
flame except to refine them and bring something
beautiful out of the refining. The fire may hurt,
and the flames may consume, but God’s hand
holds the crucible. Romans 8:28 says, “All
things work together for the good of those
who love God and are called according to His
purposes.”
All things are not good. All things, good
and bad, do work together for good, for those
who love God and are called according to
His purposes. How can, we be sure? Because
God tells us so. In the end, we must trust Him.
Someone once said, when you cannot see God’s
hand, trust His heart. We can know His heart
because He has shared it with us in scripture.

Pediatricians Can Help Teens Quit Vaping and Using Tobacco
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death and
disease in the United States, and it almost always begins
during adolescence. According to leading medical advocates,
pediatricians have a role to play in
getting kids to quit vaping electronic
cigarettes and using other tobacco
products.
Ten percent of American student’s
report using tobacco products,
according to the FDA. And while
there have been declines in the use
of cigarettes among adolescents, the
popularity of e-cigarettes and other
smokeless tobacco and nicotine
products is on the rise. Smoking and
vaping are both harmful to health,
particularly to youth, whose brains are
still developing and who are uniquely
vulnerable to nicotine dependence.
That’s why the American Academy of
Pediatrics (AAP) has developed the Youth Tobacco Cessation
Progressive Web App. This new, free clinical decision resource,
which can be used on a computer, tablet, or offline mobile app,
leads physicians through the following steps:
1. Ask: Screen for tobacco use with all youth, during every
clinical encounter.
2. Counsel: Advise all youth who use tobacco to quit and have
them set a quit date within two weeks.
3. Treat: Link adolescents to behavioral treatment extenders
and prescribe pharmacologic support when indicated. After the
visit, follow up to assess progress and offer support.
The web app also provides a
flowchart for clinical interactions,
links to product descriptions, an
AAP policy and clinical report,
sample counseling statements,
behavioral support options, such
as texting services, quit lines and
online resources, and detailed
information on pharmacologic
support, including nicotine
replacement therapy.
There is currently little data
on successful youth tobacco
treatment strategies. In the
meantime, clinicians can leverage
existing literature and promising
practices to support tobacco
cessation in young people. To learn more and to access the
Youth Tobacco Cessation Progressive Web App, visit aap.org/
HelpKidsQuit.
Tobacco use and nicotine dependence are significant health
concerns. Pediatricians can use their vital, trusted role as a
source of expertise, support, and guidance to provide teens
with confidential tobacco cessation care.
