“Luke and Theophilus”
”it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some
time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,“
- Luke 1:3
Luke’s gospel is the most comprehensive of all the Gospels. We have
details about John the Baptist’s birth, Jesus’s birth (what we call the
Christmas story), and a story about Jesus as a boy teaching His elders in
the Temple. Luke’s Gospel also tells us about Jesus’s interactions with the
“sinners” of His day, how He saved them and changed their lives. It is
a rich and beautiful Gospel that God placed in the Bible to minister to
millions of Christian’s over the ages - and it was originally written for one
man! Here are three observations about Luke’s account of Jesus’s life for
Theophilus:
1) Luke compiled a detailed history of Jesus’s life, ministry, and death
- all for one man. Theophilus was either a new believer being discipled by
Luke, or he was on Luke’s prayer list to be saved. Luke thought Theophilus
was important enough for him to write a detailed account of the Gospel
story just for him. There are people in your life, who you meet regularly,
who need to hear the Gospel story about Jesus.

2) Luke was by training a doctor (Paul’s
physician) but in Christ he became an evangelist.
Luke used his career as a physician, and the doors
that opened to him, to share the Gospel story about
Jesus. Every Christian is also an evangelist! We can use our jobs and the
doors they open where we are to share about Jesus.
3) Luke had no idea how far the ripples of his obedience would spread.
He was being obedient to the prompting of the Holy Spirit to witness to one
man - and God inspired his writing of Jesus’s story and used it as one of
the Gospels in scripture. God used Luke’s obedience in his day and time,
to minister to millions over the ages.
What can God do with your obedience? Ephesians 3:20-21 says, “Now
to him who can do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think,
according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church
and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen!”
God can use our obedience and ways that we cannot even begin to imagine
- we just need to obey.
