Reporter Sweet Blossom Alpaca Fami held their annual spectacle of fleece and shears as 60 alpacas and llamas underwent their yearly shearing the privil privilege of up a process on Thursday, April 18. This reporter had witnessing the meticulous shearing procedures performed by the seasoned professionals of Spit Happens Alpaca Services, based out of Eustis, Florida. Owned by Narvel and Debbie Pettis, Sweet Blossom Alpaca Farm, has become a cornerstone of the Millen community since the Pettises relocated from Eustis, Florida. The farm has a longstanding partnership with Spit Happens Alpaca Services, led by Chad Bryan and Joshua Hall, who boasts 17 years of expertise in the industry. Bryan and Hall traverse the region annually, dedicating four weeks to shearing alpacas and llamas across farms in Florida and Georgia. Their meticulous approach ensures the welfare of the animals while efficiently harvesting their valuable fleece. The shearing process, akin to shearing a sheep, typically lasts between 7 to 10 minutes per animal. In addition to shearing, the animals receive essential grooming services, including toenail trimming and, if necessary, teeth trimming. With alpacas shorn once a year in the spring, the harvested fleece undergoes a meticulous cleaning and sorting process. The fleece is carded to align the fibers before being spun into yam, with particular attention paid to preserving the integrity of the fine undercoat. One distinguishing feature of alpaca fleece is its thicker awn hairs, which serve to protect the delicate undercoat. Careful handling ensures these nairs are separated from the finer fibers, preserving the quality of the fleece. Once cleaned and processed, the alpaca wool is ready for various applications, from knitting wool to high-quality textiles such as scarves, shawls, hat, gloves, socks and even long underwear. Thanks to its low lanolin content, alpaca wool is relatively easy to clean, making it a sought-after material for discerning artisans and craftsmen. The annual shearing event at Sweet Blossom Alpaca Farm not only ensures the health and well-being of the animals but also provides a sustainable source of premium fleece for a range of textile products.
