Michelle Sullivan and Frank Roberts (file photo) 0000 . Four candidates in the general municipal election sent the Sandy Springs City Council District 4 election into a runoff also. Sullivan’s 1,296 votes in the Nov. 4 election at 46 percent of the votes cast weren’t enough to avoid a runoff falling short of the 50 percent plus one vote required to win the office. Roberts, a former police officer for Atlanta and Sandy Springs, tallied 840 votes, sending him to the runoff with Sullivan, who runs a small business. “Thank you to every resident who cast a vote, shared their concerns, opened their door, or offered encouragement throughout this campaign,” Sullivan told Rough Draft Atlanta. “To my supporters, volunteers, friends and family — thank you for believing in this vision.” Challengers Steven D. Hickey (336 votes) and Dave Flynn (335) fell short with less than 12 percent of the vote each in the general election. The candidates sought the seat held by Jody Reichel, who ran for Sandy Springs mayor. By Bob Pepalis A federal grant will fund overtime for Sandy Springs public safety staff who assist with World Cup security in 2026. The Sandy Springs City Council approved an agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s World Cup Grant Program during its Dec. 2 meeting. SSPD Major Forrest Bohannon said she expects $78,085 in grant funds for overtime costs. Bohannon said the city expects to deploy 33 police department staff members and three from the fire department to provide security during the three weeks of the World Cup in June and July 2026. “We should be able to be fully staffed in the city without needing to use any overtime, since we have plenty of time to plan for this,” Bohannon said. Mayor Rusty Paul said Atlanta’s law enforcement leaders asked Sandy Springs for help. Paul said Sandy Springs is working on scheduling local World Cup activities. He hoped that some events would be held in city facilities or on the City Green. The Atlanta Regional Commission brought the federal funding opportunity to the City of Atlanta. Atlanta asked that Sandy Springs get its overtime costs funded. The reimbursements will be made in 2027. 1 out of every 20 children aged 15 and younger will suffer the loss of one or both parents.
