Updates from code corner
When you hear about “civic code”
you may think of forms, laws and com
pliance. However, oftentimes code mat
ters pertain to common and not so com
mon parts of everyday life in addition to
the city’s planning, zoning and building.
The general administration of code
matters is provided by the city Commu
nity Development Department, whose
goal is to promote and protect the city
and its residents through the use of plan
ning and development practices.
Part of that protection involves pro
viding professional and efficient custom
er service through the codes compliance
division of the city. Our code officers are
responsible for assuring all existing res
idential and non-residential structures,
and all existing premises maintain the
minimum requirements and standards
established by the 2006 Internation
al Property Maintenance Code (adopt
ed by the Dunwoody City
Council).
Code matters can range
from the ordinary to the
unconventional. For in
stance, code matters per
tain to “How tall can I
build a shed?” or “Do I
need a permit to add a new
toilet in my home?” to “How tall can my
grass be?” to “Can I operate a business
from my home?” And since we are in
the business of customer service, we re
ceive many questions and requests.
One issue which has been on citizens’
minds of late is “How do I report a po
tential code violation?”
For instance, if you happen to notice
the grass is too tall on a particular prop
erty, or a home is in disrepair or aban
doned and you want to report the issue,
we ask you to notify our codes compli
ance division via email: compliance;®
dunwoodyga.gov. You can also give us a
call at 678-382-6890.
When submitting a complaint, it is
important to leave the address or spe
cific location of the issue you are con
tacting us about, as well as a summary
Steve Dush
Director of Community
Development for Dunwoody
of the issue. After a complaint is sub
mitted, we may need to contact you to
gain additional background, so be sure
to leave your contact information. This
helps us conduct a thorough investiga
tion of the issue and ensures we take ap
propriate actions in ac
cordance with the code
requirements.
Some complaints can
be resolved immedi
ately while others may
take time. We treat ev
ery issue as unique and
understand certain cir
cumstances require common sense and
practical approaches to attain compli
ance.
Following our investigation of the is
sue, we will communicate our findings
and next steps.
All of our code officers and each em
ployee within our codes compliance
division serve the needs of residents,
homeowners and businesses. We strive
to provide timely, efficient service, and
we take great pride in serving the com
munity and helping keep Dunwoody a
safe and special place to live, work and
play.
We encourage your questions, sug
gestions and thoughts. You can find the
code compliance division within the
Community Development Department
