City Currents articles are prepared by the city of Dunwoody and published I II 1 each month by the Dunwoody 1 I W V4 V Reporter as a community * Smart people - Smart city# service. They are intended to offer insight into the workings of Dunwoody city government. This installment focuses on the city's Parks and Recreation Department. Parks are vital for a city’s healthy lifestyle As a city, we have an obligation to improve and appropriately manage the resources of our community to help promote a healthy, safe and sus tainable quality of life for residents. With more than 165 acres of public park space in Dunwoody, our parks system is a critical part of upholding our obligation to our community. Public parks are oftentimes viewed as places for relaxation and retrospec tion. While this is certainly true for the city of Dunwoody, we must also understand access to parks, trails, open spaces and recreational facil ities offer seniors, adults and chil dren a place to play, be active and participate in a physically active and healthy lifestyle. The role parks play in our com munity can only be successfully up held through expert consideration to both the health of the natural envi ronment and the health of the citi zens. Consider that Georgia ranks sec ond in the nation for childhood obesity, ac cording to recent data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Obe sity is caused primarily by poor diet and lack of physical activity. Consid er also that in DeKalb County, ap proximately 13 percent of students in public schools are obese. While chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity are the leading causes of death and disability in the U.S., they are also among the most preventable. Adopt ing healthy behaviors can help pre vent or control the dangerous effects of these chronic diseases. The Dunwoody Parks and Rec reation department is committed to benefiting the public’s health. By cre ating public places which promote active, outdoor opportunities, the city is part of the solution for obesity and chronic disease prevention. Parks play an important role in the community. The management, maintenance and planning for each of the city parks is something which must be done with an eye toward the future. The city’s stewardship over its parks directly relates to the future health of our public spaces as well as our public participants. Strategic parks and recreation management is more than keeping the parks clean and trees healthy. It involves striking a balance between the future health of citizens who use Brent Walker City of Dunwoody parks and recreation manager the parks and the nurturing guidance over environmental improvements and impacts. Green space, multi-use trails, pa vilions, playgrounds and dog parks are Dunwoody park amenities which are designed and maintained for the future health of our community. No sin gle amenity or park can fulfill all the needs of all partic ipants, but by pro viding for more op portunities for physical activity and exercise, as well as relaxation and ret rospection, we are helping to improve the future health of our seniors, chil dren, adults and environment. The city and its elected officials oversee our public spaces by present ing future-oriented policy and en vironmental changes that promote healthier lifestyles to help encourage and reduce the risk of chronic diseas es such as obesity, diabetes, stroke, and cancer. Parks are about access, recreation al opportunities and the professional management and preservation of the natural environment. At the same time, our parks department must serve as a steward for healthy living and a beneficial quality of life. By continuing to work close ly with the community, the Dun woody Parks and Recreation depart ment can create a vision and guiding plan for the city’s future investment in its parks and its citizens. We wel come your input and feedback. You can reach us via email at parks@dun- woodyga.gov. With an eye toward creating a healthier and more active public, we can together form a public park sys tem which can directly impact our quality of life.
