Economy recovering unusually
slow says chief economist
Dr. Martin A. Regalia, the U.S. Chamber
of Commerce’s Chief Economist, who spoke
at the 2010 Economic Forecast Breakfast on .
Oct. 26, 2010, sponsored by the Department
of Economics, Richards College of
Business, the University of West Georgia
and the Carroll County Chamber of
Commerce, believes that the economy is
recovering unusually slowly from recession
for a variety of reasons.
Regalia believes that the large amount of
deficit spending by the federal government
may lead it to raise taxes, and this will
reduce the growth rate of GDR What it
needs to do instead, he said, is reduce its
spending. Government spending has shifted
towards mandatory spending on such things
as Medicare and Social Security.

Local Modern Woodmen
members honor hometown hero
On Oct. 25, 2010, Jermaine Jackson of
Carrollton, Ga., was honored for countless
hours of service to the community by local
Modem Woodmen of America members.
Jackson was honored for his work with
the local Boys and Girls Club of Carroll
County and many other volunteer organiza
tions through Modem Woodmen’s
Hometown Heroes Program.
In recognition of his efforts, members of
Modem Woodmen’s Carrollton Chapter pre
sented Jackson with a certificate and will
award a $100 grant to Carroll County Boys
and Girls Club, the charitable organization of
his choice.

Carroll County BOE request
SPLOST extension
The Carroll County School Board is pre
paring to request an extension of the
SPLOST (Special Local Option Sales Tax)
in the amount of 1 percent, as discussed at
their recent work session. Feedback from
preliminary meetings conveys the need for
more technology, the board said.
Also at the work session, Denney pre
sented the September Financial Report. Year
to date revenues received total 17.4 percent
($20,807,780.41) of the budget, while
expenditures are 25.59 percent
($28,558939.31) 25 percent into the budget
year. Revenues for September were
$86,657,434, while expenditures were
$80,502,644.94.

Carroll County Family Connection
holds legislative breakfast
The Carroll County Family Connection
held its 10th Annual Legislative Breakfast at
the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center on Oct.
27, 2010- Family Connection is a statewide
network of 159 collaborative organizations
whose objective is to promote the well being
of children and families.
The featured speaker a( this event was
Mike Wiggins, Southwire’s executive vice
president, who is in charge of Southwire’s 12
for Life cooperative education program. The
keynote speaker was Senator Bill Hamrick, a
local member of the Georgia Senate. Before
these men spoke, attendees at this event
were treated to a performance of the
Carrollton .High School Show Choir.
Wiggins spoke about the 12 for Life pro
gram, whose goal is to help provide high
school students with extra motivation to fin
ish 12 years of school. Students in the pro
gram are provided with classroom instruc
tion, on-the-job training, key life skills, men
toring, and employment opportunities. Like
many other companies, prior to designing
the 12 for Life program, Southwire had an

Carroll County Clerk of Court
Alan Lee to be locked up!
Carroll County Clerk of Superior Court
Alan Lee is being locked up! Not because he
did anything wrong, mind you, but because
he is raising money for the Muscular
Dystrophy Association. He needs the com
munity’s help to raise his bail money!
Alan said he is proud to partner with the
MDA to raise money as an “MDA Jailbird.”
And, on Nov. 9 at 1 p.m., Lee will be locked
up at the Inn at Oak Lawn Farms, located at
1141 Rome St. in Carrollton. For him to be
released on good behavior, Lee said citizens
must make donations to the MDA.
His initial goal is to raise $3,200 (his bail
money), but Lee said he will double the
amount of time he stays locked up for each

Crescent Area Agency on Aging (SCAAA) is accepting bids for
Aging Program Services for the following programs: Alzheimer’s
Adult Day Care, Elderly Legal Services Program, In Home
Services- Respite, Homemaker, Personal Care, Long Term Care
Ombudsman Program, Senior Center & Nutrition- Congregate and
Home Delivered Meals, Community Care Services Program.
