to the Gulf South Conference mound,
beginning with freshman Brandon
Crumbley.
Crumbley was on the team in 2010, but
used it as a redshirt year. Fite describes
him as a power arm who throws between
87-9Q mph and has good movement on his
fastball.
Next up is newcomer and junior college
transfer Jared Slaven, who comes to the
Wolves from Georgia Perimeter College.
Slaven is desribed as another power arm
that averages between 87-90 mph. He
relies on a hard slider to off-set a solid
fastball.
The third contender for a weekend spot
is a solid freshman who came on strong in
fall drills, Jamie Sexton. Fite describes
Sexton as a control pitcher who throws
between 84-86 mph with an excellent
curve ball and changeup.
Spot Starters
This pitcher will be vital in the midweek
games throughout the regular season.
Midweek games are a big part of the
. UWG schedule and can sometimes be the
difference in making it to the regional or
not.
The first of the spot starters will be sen
ior Jacob Fox. One of the tallest players on
the team. Fox had 10 appearances last sea
son with seven starts, the second-most on
the sqaud. He was third on the team in
ERA with one complete game and a 2-3
record.
The second is sophomore Randall
Wright, who made a splash last season in
the opener against Shorter, shutting down
the Hawks in order in the top of the ninth
to collect his first save and secure the
Wolves’ first win of the year.
Middle Relief Pitchers
These pitchers are all solid throwers
who will be called on to hold down the
fort in the middle innings when necessary.
The first is freshman Blake McLemore,
who hails from Harris County High
School. He is described as a solid power
pitcher with a hard curve ball. Another
freshman who is also in the mix is fresh
man Justin Key, who is a control lefty. Key
possesses a solid changeup and when his
location is on, he is very dangerous.
The final of the three middle relief
pitchers is the first returner in the group is
senior John Lees. He has been at West
Georgia for all four years of his career and
has 37 appearances in that time. Last sea
son, he had a tremendous strikeout-to-
walk ratio of 35-16.
“John cqn be a very good pitcher for us
this year and will be a leader,” Fite said.
“The biggest thing we have to do is to take
the pressure off of him by getting solid
innings out of all of our staff.”
Short Relief
Sometimes known as fireballers in base
ball vernacular, short relievers are some
times referred to as closers or stoppers.
The first player in line as a closer is
freshman Walker White from Coffee
County High School. Fite describes
Walker as a power pitcher who averages
between 88 and 91 mph and his best fast
ball of the fall hit 93 mph.
The second is a polar opposite in sub
mariner Keith Manley. A solid lefty
returner, Manley throws below sidearm
and relies on a solid changeup and move
ment on his fastball, which only hits 79-
81.
According to Fite, Manley worked
extremely hard in the offseason and is
ready to go for the 2010 campaign.
The next preview section for the Wolves
will come next week and will feature the
infield.
