The Carrollton Kiwanis Club
by Sam Gentry
The Kiwanis Club of Carrollton is a
hard-working service group with a long
and rich history. Formed in 1947, it was
the 17th Kiwanis club in Georgia.
Carrollton Kiwanians function under the
motto “serving the children of the
world.”
According to a synopsis of the club
written by the late Floyd Hoskins, the
club was organized by the Kiwanis Club
of Newnan and had twenty-six charter
members. Now, with over 100 fulltime
members, the club meets at the Sunset
Hills Country Club at noon every
Friday and features a variety of program
speakers.
The focus of the group was on initially
on youth in Carrollton and Carroll
County, as it remains to this day.
Kiwanians also work with adults in need
as well as the elderly. The heart of the
Carrollton Club is “friends and neigh
bors working together to build a better
community.”
Many of the service projects of the
club include giving donations to local
groups in the community. However,
Kiwanians believe in investing their time
and talents as well.
The club has many annual projects

that raise money as well as serve to
enrich the lives of children. For instance,
the Kiwanis Bowl is a three weekend
long football tournament that features an
average of 60 youth football teams. Over
the course of the tournament, teams are
narrowed down until a final champion
ship game is held on the last night to
determine the overall winning team.
The Dr. Suess reading program is
another way Carrollton Kiwanians give
back to the community. Every February,
in honor of his birthday, club members
read Dr. Suess books to children at ele
mentary schools across Carroll County.
The goal is to encourage reading
development.
The Carrollton Kiwanis Art and
Talent Showcase is one of the most
popular projects among members of the
community. The event highlights talents
of local students, and winners of the
event are awarded scholarships to help
further their educations.'
Continuing with the tradition of help
ing local youth, the Kiwanis Brining Up
Grades (BUG) program recognizes stu
dents “who improved and maintain their
grades.” Rewards are presented to stu
dents at planned events to honor them
for their achievements.
There are two types of memberships
in the Carrolton Kiwanis Club of
Carrollton: full memberships and service
memberships. Full members enjoy
weekly business meetings with informa
tive programs, meals, fellowship with
other members and opportunities to join
in a variety of service projects. Service
members may participate in service pro
jects and attend regular meetings on a
pay-as-you-go basis. Members of Kiwanis
include business people, homemakers,
retirees, young adults and all other
service-oriented people.
Carrollton Kiwanis members say one
of the greatest parts of being in the club
is the friendships developed while work
ing together. Many of the Carrollton
Kiwanians have worked together in the
group for decade's. These are friendships,
they say, that will last a lifetime.
Kiwanis itself was founded in 1915 in
Detroit, Michigan. It started out as a
group of business leaders gathering to
share ideas and to network. It’s focus
changed from business to service in 1919.
There are now more than 260,000
adults and 320,000 youth in over 8,000
clubs in 96 countries. ,
