Carroll County featured again:
GPB’s Georgia Traveler program
For the second time, Carroll County will
hit the airwaves on Georgia Public
Broadcasting’s most popular TV show,
Georgia Traveler, in an episode scheduled
to debut March 25. The show will feature a
segment on the adventurous and unique
resort and retreat, Historic Banning Mills,
near Whitesburg.
The March 25 segment will feature
Banning owners Mike and Donna Holder
and their staff as well as local historian
Doug Mabry discussing the history, natural
features and high-flying zipline canopy
tour (the highest and longest in North
America) Banning encompasses. In
addition to the first-rate retreat lodging,
dining and outdoor activities visitors find
at Banning now, the area along Snake
Creek Gorge was the scene of many firsts.
Banning was one of the first towns in
Georgia to produce its own electricity and
the location of the birth of the paper-from-
pulp industry.

Tanner hospitals on
Quality Honor Roll
Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton,
Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica and
Higgins General Hospital in Bremen have
been named to the Georgia Hospital
Association’s (GHA) Partnership for
Health and Accountability (PHA) Quality
Honor Roll. The three facilities are among
just 56 hospitals in Georgia to be placed in
the Presidential category, one of the
highest on the list.
The honor roll is based on clinical data
provided by the federal Centers for
Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS),
which administers the nation’s Medicare
and Medicaid programs. The data was
collected from July 2009 to June 2010.
All acute care hospitals are required to
submit care data to CMS. This data details
how well a hospital’s caregivers adhere to
a list of eight Appropriate Care Measures
(ACM), which are the clinical processes of
care that are known to be the most
effective methods of treatment for patients
who have suffered heart attacks, heart
failure or pneumonia. The ACM is a
composite measure that determines
whether or not a patient received the right
care at the right time.

House Bill 362 to significantly
alter HOPE Scholarship
Faced with the need to constrain State
spending, the House Appropriations
Committee on Thursday, February 24,
2011 approved by a vote of 60 - 2 House
Bill 326 which would significantly alter
the HOPE Scholarship.
This bill calls for dividing the HOPE
Scholarship into two programs, the
traditional HOPE Scholarship program
and a Zell Miller HOPE Scholarship
program for very high-achieving HOPE
Scholars. (When he was Georgia’s
governor Miller proposed he HOPE
Scholarship program.) The Bill was
amended to change the bonuses paid to
Georgia Lottery employees and the
amount retailers get for selling a winning
ticket. The Bill will now be considered by
the House Rules Committee.
The Bill’s traditional HOPE program
differs from the existing HOPE
Scholarship in that students will be
required to take more rigorous high school
courses in advanced math, advanced
science, advanced foreign language or AP
or IB courses. The reason for this change
is to eliminate students’ need for
remediation. To keep the scholarship, a
student will have to maintain a 3.0 GPA in
college.

“Geocaching” bringing
tourists to Carroll County
While most people probably haven’t
heard about it, the treasure-hunting game
of geocaching is quietly and steadily
bringing tourists to Carroll County, and
they’re bringing their wallets with them.
The official website for the game,
www.geocaching.com, describes it as “a
high-tech treasure hunting game played
throughout the world by adventure seekers
equipped with GPS devices.”
The basic idea is to locate hidden
containers, called geocaches, outdoors and
then share your experiences online.”
Anyone anywhere can hide a geocache,
which can be any kind of weather-proof
container that’s filled with inexpensive
goodies, like pencils or small toys. The
person who hid the geocache then goes
online to the website and enters the GPS
coordinators of that particular cache, and
then it’s up to the treasure hunters to put
their sleuthing skills to work. ' filed in January 2010.
