The Villa Rica/Temple Kiwanis Club
story and photo by Prissi Sullivan
The Kiwanis Club was begun in 1915
in Detroit, Michigan by Allen S.
Browne, a professional organizer, and
Joseph C. Prance, a tailor, for the pur
pose of business networking. The name
comes from an Indian phrase,
NunKeewan-is, which means “we trade.”
However, the truer meaning is “we have
a good time; we make noise.” Kiwanians
have been making noise ever since. Upon
the formation of a club in Hamilton,
Ontario in 1916, Kiwanis became a inter
national organization. The focus changed
from business and fraternal to service in
1919. In 2005, Kiwanis, International
adopted the slogan: “Serving the
Children of the World.”
The mission of Kiwanis clubs is to
improve the community through service
without thought of personal gain. They
strive to give primacy to humanity and
the spirit rather than material values of
life; encourage daily living of the Golden
Rule; promote adoption and application
of higher social, business, and profes
sional standards; develop by precept and
example a more intelligent, aggressive,
and serviceable citizenship; and to pro
vide (through clubs) a practical means to
form enduring friendships, to render
altruistic service, and to build a better
community.
Kiwanis International encourages serv
ice through several Kiwanis programs
involving children. Read Around the
World supports volunteers reading to
children and the provision of books to
children. Young Children Priority One
focuses on the needs of children ages 0 to
5 years old, such as maternal and chil
dren’s health, child care and develop
ment, parent education and support, and
safety and pediatric trauma. Terrific Kids
supplies student recognition; promotes
character development, self-esteem, and
perseverance; and recognition of goals
reached through teacher/student collabo
ration in improving behavior, peer rela
tionships, better attendance in school,
and improvement of school work. The
Eliminate Project, in partnership with
UNICEF, is charged with eliminating
maternal and neonatal tetanus by 2015.
The Villa Rica Kiwanis Club was
organized in 1998 and joined with the
Temple Club in 2008. The Club cur
